REDCap Applications Specialist
PI: Dr. Stephen Freedland
The Institute for Medical Research (IMR), an affiliate of the Durham VA Health Care System (DVAHCS), is looking for a full-time REDCap Applications Specialist to create and maintain REDCap databases and survey administration tools related to clinical research projects conducted by the Principal Investigator, Dr Stephen Freedland , and associates in Cancer Research Lab . This position will report to the Technical Solutions Manager.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to be part of a highly productive and dynamic team of researchers working on studies conducted by the Principal Investigator, Dr. Stephen Freedland, and his associates in his cancer research lab . The REDCap Applications Specialist supports the collection and management of large amounts of clinical data and will be expected to learn clinical research methods and clinical presentations of various diseases. Applicants must have the ability to: work independently in a fast-paced environment; prioritize and manage the workflow of multiple projects; effectively communicate both orally and in written form; translate clinical specifications to technical requirements; sit for long periods in front of computers; and be fluent in English.
Location: This position is remote. If in-office: This position is located in Durham, North Carolina and candidates must be willing to relocate prior to start date. If remote: IMR employees must reside in the state of North Carolina.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Critical Element 1
REDCap Electronic Data Capture and Survey Administration
+ Lead the design, development, and management of projects in REDCap for clinical research studies; duties include but are not limited to:
+ Design new REDCap tools to facilitate electronic data capture (EDC), survey administration, and data management.
+ Maintain and update of existing REDCap systems.
+ Migration of study data from legacy applications to new ones.
+ Complete requirements all key areas of REDCap, including study design and configuration, API development, reporting, Data Access Groups, Data Quality Management, and custom modules.
+ Apply agile methodology to effectively identify and document user requirements and to deliver valued solutions to users quickly.
+ Provide input on project decisions related to timelines, feasibility, and other relevant issues working with team leads to make sure work is completed in timely manner for project deadlines to be met.
+ Coordinate with research coordinators to ensure all applications adhere to HIPAA, IRB, and 21CFR Part 11 compliance.
+ Identify and navigate organizational constraints, working towards efficiencies and innovations as possible within those constraints.
+ Assist with IT troubleshooting and coordinate with VA Enterprise staff regarding REDCap hosting and features.
Critical Element 2
Document Work
+ Document work related to REDCap design using comments, codebooks, and good programming practices.
+ Develop user guides and SOPs.
+ Utilize version control as part of code development and documentation.
+ Revise and maintain procedural manuals and training materials, as needed.
+ Provide written, oral, and/or electronic status reports of assigned tasks.
Critical Element 3
Collaborate with Team Members
+ + Work closely with investigators, research operations, and other technical staff to understand development priorities and regularly communicate project status.
+ Coordinate with multiple collaborators around the country to advise on data abstraction, to help in data management, and to facilitate merging of their data with our database systems.
+ Attend kick-off meetings, project meetings, and other ad-hoc meetings.
+ Work with end users to gather business requirements and develop technical and software solutions to meet research needs.
+ Effectively collaborate with data analysts and database developers to produce reusable code and data pipelines for increased analytic efficiency across multiple projects.
+ Provide system training and technical assistance for other technical staff and end users using REDCap.
+ Communicate with VA technology departments to address/resolve IT needs and problems.
+ Attend Technical Operations Team and Freedland Lab meetings on a frequent and regular schedule.
Qualifications:
+ Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems/Technology, or another relevant field.
+ A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a full stack developer, data analyst, database programmer, or other relevant work that aligns with the qualifications of this job, will be considered in lieu of education in the computer science field.
+ Minimum of 2 years practical experience with survey and data capture administration using the REDCap platform.
+ Experience with database management and accessing databases via SQL.
+ Proficiency with data cleaning, manipulation, and management via Python, R, or SQL.
+ Experience mapping data to a common data model, especially the OMOP (Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership) CDM, strongly desired.
+ Experience with Jira preferred.
+ Organized and detailed-oriented self-starter with the capacity to deliver on multiple projects simultaneously, manage multiple tasks, and handle changing priorities and deadlines.
+ Ability to solve problems, troubleshoot, contribute new ideas and meet deadlines.
+ Ability to perform extensive and thorough quality control processes.
+ Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
Physical Requirements: The physical requirements and activities that are required to perform the essential functions of the position include, but may not be limited to, as follows: Must be able to occasionally lift, pull and push a minimum of 25 , stand for extended periods of time, sit for extended periods of time, squat, kneel, and stoop, regularly use fingers, hands for computer work.
Supervisory Controls: The position of REDCap Applications Specialist is under the direct supervisor of the Technical Solutions Manager .

Salary Range or Rate of Pay : $72,000 - $97,830
Status: Exempt
Start Date: Expected start date will be 4- 6 weeks after the offer but is somewhat flexible and contingent upon completion and approval of VA paperwork.
