POSITION SUMMARY

Marathon Petroleum Company (MPC), the largest petroleum refiner in the United States, is seeking an experienced Chemist for its Refining Analytical and Development (RAD) Department in Catlettsburg, Kentucky.  The individual selected for this position will apply chemometric principles to leverage spectroscopy in the prediction of physical and chemical properties of finished fuels, intermediates, and feedstocks.  Support for combustion testing (knock engine and cetane) is possible.  Depending on the needs of MPC and the RAD department, this position may encompass additional responsibilities.  Therefore, discrete knowledge of MPC finished products and the processes used in their manufacture will be necessary. Skills in troubleshooting, root-cause determination, and written/verbal communication will be paramount for success in this position.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Apply chemometrics to various spectroscopy techniques to predict chemical and physical properties of feedstocks, intermediates, and finished products

Support the nationwide network of MPC production facilities and labs in the implementation, application, and maintenance of spectroscopy for property prediction

Analyze various petroleum and renewable materials using industry-standard techniques

Become a technical advisor for the company as part of the spectroscopy team

Leverage knowledge of MPC products and intermediates to support various organizations, such as Law, Marketing, Industrial Hygiene, and the various product quality groups

Extracts pertinent information and concepts from various technical sources and applies them continually in all work assignments

Communicate with others, both within Marathon as well as other industry partners, in written and verbal forms

Promotes a safety culture

Represent RAD at various internal and external cross-functional group meetings

Travel required: <10% initially, but potentially up to 30%

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

A Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or other related discipline with a minimum of four chemistry courses and two chemistry labs is required.

Five years of experience in the petroleum industry is preferred.

Possession of strong multi-tasking abilities.

Working knowledge of general laboratory instrumentation with an emphasis on petroleum techniques is preferred.

Computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office software such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Excellent written and verbal skills are required.
