POSITION SUMMARY:
An Instrument Reliability Engineer assists with managing instrument and control valve maintenance, which includes budgeting for planned replacements, troubleshooting existing issues, implementing new solutions, and creating new reliability programs targeting longer run-times, reduced maintenance cost, and safer operations. The job role includes technical and strategic support on preventive maintenance, repair, and operation of existing instruments and control valves as well as engineering support for new and modified instrumentation. The position requires interfacing with instrument technicians, instrument craft advisors, project engineers, process engineers, operations specialists, supervision, and management.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance in instrumentation design, operation, and maintenance, consulting internal and external experts as required.Aid in developing and implementing strategies for maintaining instruments and control valves, including monitoring plans, PM plans, and PdM activities.Help ensure compliance with PM requirements from regulatory agencies.Revalidate and create safety system testing procedures, maintenance procedures, and QA/QC checklists.Assist project engineers with specifying and procuring new instruments.Coordinate turnaround preventive maintenance scope identification and add identified scope to turnaround worklists.Champion Management of Change for maintenance driven changes and minor modifications to improve reliability.Assist in keeping instrumentation documentation and spare parts up to date, submitting drawings to librarians and stock change requests to material coordinators.Lead formal incident investigations to determine root causes and corrective actions for instrument and control valve failures and champion the implementation of recommendations resulting from incident investigations.Provide leadership and decision-making on repair solutions during turnarounds and unplanned equipment outages.Participate in capital and expense project development, aiding in design/specification and cost estimation and ensuring compliance with Marathon specifications.Review work order failure coding and make corrections as needed.Utilize work order data to identify “bad actors” with high maintenance cost or high cost of downtime.Submit Project Request Forms (PRFs) and assist in Decision Support Package (DSP) creation which includes developing concepts and cost justification for reliability improvements.Utilize reliability tools such as Reliability Growth Analysis, Asset Criticality Analysis, TapRoot, and Life cycle cost analysis.Support and consult corporate specialists.Consult Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEMs) and vendors on preventive maintenance, repair, and specification/design.Participate in process unit Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) reviewsOccasionally train craft technicians, craft advisors, and operators.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering is required.Minimum three (3) years instrument engineering experience in a refining, chemical or petrochemical facility is required. Five (5) years of experience preferred.Experience with refinery instruments, control valves, and safety systems is preferred.Experience with SAP, GE APM, PI Vision, Intergraph Smart Instrumentation is preferred.A valid Driver's License is required.Less than 5% travel expected.As an energy industry leader, our career opportunities fuel personal and professional growth.
