I. Major Responsibilities:

1.  Performs specialized or general procedures according to established departmental protocols.
2.  Performs ultrasound procedures for Cardiac Ultrasound procedures and other specific areas as required.
3.  Operates all types of Ultrasound equipment.  Performs portable exams in various areas throughout the hospital to include the Operating Room and Intensive Care Units and off-site locations.  Records images and makes hard copies (CD’s) where applicable.   
4.  Uses Epic to schedule and complete exams as applicable.  Completes preliminary reports in Epic. 
5.  Serves as a resource to sonographers, MDs, and students.
6.  Assists in the care and maintenance of facilities, equipment and supplies.
7.  Maintains clean and safe work area.  Reports any hazardous conditions or equipment breakdown to supervisor.
8.  Provides proper patient care. Interviews patients for required information. Explains procedures to patients to ensure their understanding, cooperation, comfort and to optimize test results. Positions patients as required. Exercises care when moving patients to ensure their comfort and safety. Takes vital signs as required; informs physician of changes.
9.  Maintains patient records and statistics accurately. 
10. Label’s sonograms properly to assist in diagnosis and to ensure correct identification.  Provides test information to physicians.  Notifies physicians immediately of results revealing patient risks.
11. Maintain records, reports and files as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications:


License/Certification/Education:

Required:
1. Specialized post-secondary training equal to two years of college. 
2. Registration required by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), including the RDCS (Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer, under the ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) for cardiac specialties.  

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies, including age-specific competencies and their measurements, will be developed and maintained in the individual departments.  The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description.  Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work is considered moderate.  Position requires work indoors in a normal patient care environment.
