Job Duties

Assessment, treatment and patient care responsibilities are delivered with a knowledge of patient growth and development and are appropriate to the ages of the patient served.

ASSESSMENT

Identifies and documents initial observation, admission and ongoing assessment of the patient.
including review of patient profile, head to toe assessment, vital signs,
cardiac monitoring.
Assesses, intervenes, and documents appropriately to meet the patient’s
educational, psychosocial and discharge planning needs.
Continued ongoing assessment to detect and respond to changes in the patient’s condition.

DIRECT PATIENT CARE

Ensure that operative consents are complete, signed and correct.
Provide pre operative instructions to the patient.
Provides safe, competent and efficient patient care within hospitals policies procedures and standards to post anesthesia patients regardless of complexity.
Establishes priorities adapting to changing patient and PACU situations.
Assumes responsibility for effectively managing nursing care of individualpatients as aprimary nurse.
Recognizes potential problems and sets priorities according to change in the patient status and unusual occurrences.
Initiates interdisciplinary collaboration related to the care of patient’s in the immediate post anesthesia period.
Administers intravenous medications in compliance with policies and procedures.
Administers and monitors the patient receiving chemotherapeutic agents as ordered throughout the Hospital in compliance with policies and procedures.
Titrates medicated infusions as per physician’s prescriptive, protocols and standard.
Interprets clinical data and notifies the physician promptly if immediate changes in management are indicated.
Documents all pertinent information related to assessments, treatments, responses to care and progression to goals and reflecting a comprehensive and integrated approach to nursing care.
Seeks clarification of physician’s orders that are unclear or inappropriate.
Plans patient care to facilitate discharge in a timely manner.
Completes the discharge assessment and documentation.
Provides comprehensive patient care report when transferring a patient from PACU to an in-patient unit.

SAFETY

Complete checks to ensure that all emergency equipment is on hand and in good working order.
Recognizes and reports malfunction or failure of equipment used in the area to Biomedical Engineering through entering an electronic service request;takes appropriate action to immediately remove and replace such equipment.
Assures that all monitoring equipment and ventilator alarms are set according to physician orders and standards.

INDIRECT PATIENT CARE ACTIVITIES

Applies principles of infection control and safety.
Customer Service: Respect, flexibility, knowledge, confidence, professionalism,
caring, patience and helpfulness. All responses should be timely, professional, caring and respectful in accordance with Customer Service Performance expectations.
Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards; promotes adherence to Patient Bill of Rights.
Understands and adheres to the Medical Center’s Code of Conduct.
Assists in orientation of new personnel and precepting personnel in the administration of chemotherapeutic agents.
Provides leadership and acts as a clinical resource for all ancillary personel.

OTHER JOB DUTIES

Effectively utilizes the hospital computer system as it pertains to job responsibilities and in accordance with hospital policy.
Orients patient’s significant others to the new environment; develops rapport and initiates and follows through with patient and family education.
Works collaboratively and assists other personnel as needed.
Participates in an On Call Rotation for coverage during O.R. off hours and holidays based on department/hospital needs.
Assists in data collection and analysis of Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement measures.
Participates in continuing education activities; attends scheduled in-service programs; keeps current with competencies and mandatories.

 Keeps up to date with current trends pertinent to area of assignment.
Attends monthly staff meetings. Performs other related duties as required.


BASIC COMPETENCIES
 Education
Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
Current NJ licensure as an RN in good standing.


Experience
One year of PACU, O.R. or Critical Care experience preferred.
One year of Chemotherapy administration experience preferred.


Skills
American Heart Association ACLS, BCLS Certifications.
I.V. Certification.
EKG interpretation
Good oral and written communication skills.
Good interpersonal skills.
Speaks, reads and writes English to the extent required by the position.
Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Certification.

JOB SETTING/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

All patient care areas.

Frequently prolonged standing/walking.
Lifts, positions, pushes, and/or transfers patients.
Protective clothing worn: face shield, gloves, impermeable gown.
