Job Overview:
Functions as the surgical assistant to the operating surgeon during the operative procedure. Provides comprehensive nursing management and care during the operative phase. The Registered Nurse First Assist (“RNFA”) should be experienced in both scrubbing and circulating nurse roles and have excellent skills for patient care. Demonstrates leadership skills that foster positive teamwork in the surgery department. Demonstrates maturity to work effectively with everyone in the surgery department and exhibits ability to productively solve issues/problems.
Qualifications Knowledge of theories, principles, and concepts normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree in Nursing. BSN Required.Completed an accredited RNFA program that meets the criteria set out in the AORN Standards for the RN First Assistant Education programs.Minimum two years Nursing experience and another 2 years of Operating Room RN experience in both scrubbing and circulating roles.Licensure required as a Registered Nurse by the State of New Jersey.THE RNFA needs to apply and be credentialed/privileged by the St. Joseph’s Medical Affairs to function as a First Assist in the OR.
Effective January 2019, St. Joseph’s Health requires certifications for Basic Life Support (BLS) to be granted through the American Heart Association.
