Summary:
Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Manager (or designee) implements supervises and evaluates the nursing care of each patient using a nursing process and in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. From admission to discharge plans with consideration of the aging process throughout the life span including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns.
Responsibilities:
Provides direct patient care.
Provides leadership by delegating supervising and participating in safe nursing care activities provided by ancillary personnel.
Evaluates effectiveness of patient care and identifies opportunities for improvement.
Collaborates with the healthcare team patient family and community services regarding the patient care outcome/discharge planning.
Assesses and provides appropriate teaching based on patient and family needs.
Participates in unit-based quality improvement and research activities.
Utilizes all available resources to provide quality cost effective patient care.
Meets and maintains clinical competencies measured by pre-determined credentialing standards mandatory/safety education and completion of Basic Life Support and ACLS/PALS as appropriate.
Identifies growth needs and participates in educational opportunities and professional organizations.
Serves as a role model/preceptor to new graduate nurses and less experienced personnel.
Assumes charge nurse responsibility for the patient care unit as delegated.

Provides education to patient according to age and developmental level.
Evaluates the patient�s and/or families/caregivers response to teaching using teach back and GetWell Network methodologies.

Recognizes when the patient needs or wants to talk about problems concerns or fears; fosters relationships that allow for meaningful communication
Interacts with disorganized patients to orient them to time person and place; increase their attention span clarify their thinking with reality testing. Displays an objective non-judgmental attitude.
Functions as a group leader demonstrating an understanding of group dynamics
Participates in group activities and therapy demonstrating an understanding of group dynamics
Participates with the multidisciplinary treatment team process by reporting nursing assessment findings on assigned patients. Develops and revises the individualized patient care plan and provides input into the individualized patient treatment plan
Fosters the concept of maintaining a therapeutic milieu for all patients
Knowledge/ Skills
Protects disorganized self-destructive or psychotic patients through nursing interventions. Assists with out-of-control patients using de-escalation and physical restraint as needed
Maintains annual department-specific competency in managing assaultive and challenging behavior seclusion and restraint guidelines guidelines for suicide risk and precautions and emergency unit evacuation procedures
Attends CPI certification per hospital guidelines within 3 months of employment
Other information:
Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:Baccalaureate in Nursing preferred.
Must have current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.
Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Visual and aural ability to monitor patient status.
Physical ability to assist in lifting and positioning patients.
Exposed to patient care environment.
Physical ability for extensive walking and standing; lifting positioning and pushing patients on stretchers.
