The 5800 unit at Rochester General Hospital is an acute medical and telemetry unit that provides high quality care to a wide range of patients. It is a 37-bed unit that cares for patients with behavioral disorders who are not medically cleared to go to the inpatient psychiatric unit with underlying conditions such as schizophrenia and suicidal ideation. Others are admitted with medical conditions such as down syndrome and patients with traumatic brain injury who reside in group homes. The department also provides services to peritoneal dialysis and patients with drug and alcohol withdrawal that are monitored according to the CIWA protocol until stable for discharge to rehabilitation facilities. Palliative care patients are cared for on the unit focusing on keeping the patient comfortable and are able to provide support to their family until hospice care is available at a facility. The unit cares for complex respiratory patients requiring CPAP/ Bipap, and tracheostomies providing high flow oxygen as needed.
