SUMMARY

Coordinate total nursing care for patients using nursing standards and the nursing process; participate in patient and family teaching; provide leadership working cooperatively with other health care providers. The RN is responsible for providing, coordinating and directing individualized, comprehensive nursing care to the obstetrical patient based upon the nursing process and in adherence to Meadville Medical Centers Mission and Vision Statement. The RN is accountable for her/his own actions, and is directly responsible to the New Life Unit Manager. In the absence of the New Life Manager, the RN is responsible to the House Supervisor. The NLU RN is also responsible for supervising other RN’s, LPN’s and OB Technician.

JOB DUTIES

Through various communication methods, clearly and accurately communicates patient care assessment, interventions and plan of care.

Communicates change of shift report accurately and thoroughly allowing for clarification of report if necessary.

Plans, implements and documents patient care teaching.

Updates Process Interventions and Plan of care throughout shift.

Works with manager to exceed patient satisfaction goals. Communicates to manager (written or verbal) patient care issues, equipment problems, staff capabilities and/or limitations.

Interacts with physicians about patient care issues, cultivates professional relationships with physicians.

Telephone orders are “read back” and this is documented.

Conducts “hourly rounds” on assigned patients consistently.

Focus is on safety of patients through fall reduction, restraint reduction and the safe administration of medications.

Cognizant of and addresses the patient’s level of comfort and pain management. Reassess and documents.

Demonstrates knowledge and skill of IV insertion and maintenance. Adheres to Nursing Policy N-150.  Follows the 5 rights of medication administration.

Demonstrates ability to identify priority tasks and manage workload.

Demonstrates correct method of specimen collection. Uses protective equipment as indicated.

Demonstrates the ability to recognize changes in patient condition, including emergency/crisis situation and initiates appropriate measures in a calm and organized manner.

Demonstrates knowledge of and adheres to policies and procedures of the hospital and department - If unfamiliar with policy/procedure, will access appropriate resource.

Flexibly responds to changing needs of unit, willingly floats to other units, adjusts work schedule to meet the unit’s needs.

Demonstrates self-direction and improving professional growth and knowledge. Promotes excellence in nursing.  Participates in interdisciplinary councils that evaluate clinical practice or health services.

Other:

Participates in the training/monitoring of new employees, med/nursing students.  Provides feedback and makes recommendations.

Identifies operational problems and seeks assistance/completes work order.

In the leadership role, directs unit staff in operations of daily work. Makes assignments, assesses staffing needs, coordinates flow of activity, and communicates with Nursing Supervisor.

Uses a positive approach for conflict resolution while providing leadership for staff. Utilizes the customer service department if necessary.

Effectively communicates with customers to address needs and problems (includes patients, families, other dept., etc.)

Keep customers up to date concerning any delay in care.

Maintains effective and open lines of communication with fellow staff members, unit manager and nursing supervisor.

Uses hospital phone, email appropriately / limits personal phone calls.

Medical record documentation is accurate, complete and organized and per MMC policy.

Express concern and understanding regarding patient and family satisfaction.

Demonstrates clinical/technical competency within the role of the Registered Nurse and utilizes various resources to assist in reaching this goal.

Administration/EMAR.

Identifies appropriate actions/side effects and indications for medications.

Assesses pain using the appropriate scale and responds as needed.

Reassess response to interventions.

Accurately enters patient charges.

Demonstrates proficiency in assisting during Cesarean section births by preparing the patient, fulfilling the role of scrub nurse and circulating nurse.

Formulates recommendations to improve nursing care and patient outcomes.

Supports TQI (Total Quality Improvement).

Assumes responsibility as a self-directed professional.

Participates in MMC educational activities/programs, unit meetings and completes New Life Unit and hospital annual credentialing (skills day/Con-ed) in a timely manner.

Seeks constructive feedback regarding his/her practice/takes action to achieve goals identified.

Promotes and enhances optimal functioning of the unit while in the leadership role as charge nurse or team leader. Demonstrates professionalism.

Accountability for addressing concerns, resolving issues with others. Explores alternative solution for solving problems.

Ensures that patient care is provided according to policies, procedures, and patient standards of care

Utilizes the Nursing Supervisor/Nurse Manager as a resource person and consultant for decision making throughout the shift.

Provides recommendations for evaluations, commends staff and/or relays staff concerns to manager.
