General Summary
Provides patient care and professional nursing services in pre-, intra- and postoperative areas, normally in an outpatient setting. Assists physicians during operative procedures and in providing care to patients. Instructs patients and their families in appropriate care.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provides general nursing care and personal care assistance to patients. Writes initial nursing histories, assesses patients' conditions and develops individual care plans for patients. Prepares the operating room for cases by setting up table, instruments and supplies according to type of case. Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures and after terminal cleaning. Monitors and restocks supplies. Prepares patients preoperatively for surgical procedures. Assists the surgical team during operative procedures. Maintains aseptic techniques; actively monitors situations which could lead to breaches in aseptic technique. Assists in maintaining correct count of instruments, sutures and sponges. Assists in patient care related activities such as starting IV solutions and inserting tubes. Administers postoperative care by monitoring status and observing for postoperative complications. Provides health care instruction/education to patient and family members. Performs a variety of nursing administrative duties. Prepares and maintains records of patient charges. Variation of duties may result based on the assigned customer care unit(s). This may include differences in the specific clinical skills required of the RN. In addition to requirements specified in the license and certification section below, current BLS certification for all areas of nursing practice is required.Current certification may be required for the following areas of nursing practice:Emergency Care Center - ACLS, PALSIntensive Care Center & MSCC Lead - ACLS, PALSL&D - ACLS, NRP, - Experienced L&D nurses will obtain within 6 months and new L&D nurses will obtain at 1 year of experienceNICU - NRPPEDS - PALSPCC/PACU/ENDO - ACLS, PALSProcedural - ACLSCommon Expectations:

Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s). Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise. Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation. Ensures an adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment. Enters and/or retrieves data from established computer files using knowledge of various computer software applications.
