Registered Nurse (RN), Radiation Oncology, Full time, days, 8am-4:30pm

JOB SUMMARY: 

Radiation oncology clinical nurse position expected to independently provide and coordinate care provided to patients within the UM UCH Kaufman Cancer Center Radiation Oncology department. Serves as a fully effective and participative team member within the multidisciplinary patient care services team. Demonstrates and models the full range of nursing professional practice in both care provided and in participation in the development of strategies to improve patient outcomes, satisfaction with services and cost-effectiveness.

JOB TASK LIST:

Completes a comprehensive assessment of individuals receiving oncologic services at the UM UCH Kaufman Cancer Center.  Promotes positive relationships with all customers, taking into account the varied needs and values of patients, families and physicians.  Services as an essential link between patients, families, treating physicians and all other care providers. 

Provides all necessary education and support material to patients at any visit to the Radiation Center at Kaufman Cancer Center.  Reinforces information with patients and families on disease, procedures, and testing results. Provides appropriate clinical recommendations based on the multidisciplinary plan of care and end of treatment planning. Monitors patient progress: consults with physician, mid-level providers and other members of the care delivery team as needed.  Refers to appropriate physician or service line as needed for complex patient care issues or concerns. Completes symptom management and assessment of treatment anticipated toxicities (ex., skin care, diarrhea, oral care, nutrition, hygiene and wound care).Monitors and maintains IV therapy for patients with central vascular access devices such as infusion port, tunneled catheters, midlines and PICCs (to include aspiration of blood for diagnostic tests, needle changes for infusion ports, dressing changes and discontinuing of percutaneous central catheters).  Administers and monitors medications: accurately assists with prescription documentation and ordering.Identifies at risk patients with complex medical and psychosocial needs, assesses treatment options, and opportunities for patient to receive interventions and resources.Communicates patient-related clinical information clearly, accurately and thoroughly in verbal and written formats using AIDET and SBAR as standard practice.  Identifies the needs of inpatients, patient concerns and manages conflict in a timely and professional in manner.Coordinates and participates in multidisciplinary clinics (breast, lung, cardio-oncology, tumor conferences, inpatient, proton center, and concurrent treatment). Informs all members of the Cancer Care Team of patient progress (ex., inpatient, proton center, concurrent treatment and VA system) as appropriate.Assists the Kaufman Cancer Center in developing, implementing and evaluating new processes of care as determined by the team including but not limited to improvements in technology, equipment, certifications and best practice guidelines. Maintains collaborative professional working relationships with clinical and administrative team members necessary to develop and maintain a successful cross-continuum of care necessary for this patient population. Consistency employs KCC Core Values and Behaviors (excellence, compassion, responsibility, trust integrity, and respect).Participates in the UM UCH Kaufman Cancer Center performance improvement activity and outcome measurement.  Tracks patient outcomes and relevant data (i.e., variance reporting).Participate in case conferences, in-services, and in teaching, including continuing education events which are relevant to the position, complete departmental annual safety program, complete the necessary annual departmental competencies and maintenance of 10 contact hours of education/year are required.Participates in related profession and/or community organizations.Demonstrates safe, effective patient and population centered care. Ensuring safe environment by participating in EOC rounding, recognizes and responds to all emergency and code situations appropriately. Demonstrates interpersonal skills, appropriate to the age/developmental stage of the patient, family and/or visitor.()  Newborn/infant                          d. Qualifications

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Education & Training:  Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.  Currently licensed RN in Maryland.

Work Orientation & Experience:  Minimum of one (1) year acute hospital or outpatient experience preferred or recent clinical experience in a comparable setting.  Certification in BCLS required.  Certification in ACLS preferred. 

Skills & Abilities:  Ability to:  a) convey verbal and written information; b) follow directions;  d) respond to emergency situations appropriately; e) respond to physically aggressive patients appropriately; f) comply with OSHA standards; g) organize and manage time effectively setting appropriate priorities; h) make independent decisions consistent with current policies, procedures and nursing standards; i) manual dexterity to carry out fine motor skills; and j) adapt hours of availability to variable and changing needs of the radiation center, may include evening and weekend hours.
