Aspirus Wausau Hospital in Wausau, WI is seeking a REGISTERED NURSE - SANE - EDUCATION to join our Emergency Room team!

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) is part of a multidisciplinary response team who will work with law enforcement investigators, CPS social workers, the District Attorney, and Victim Advocate Services counselors responding to patients who report a sexual assault. The SANE is a registered nurse who will perform medical screenings, perform forensic medical exams to document injuries, collect and preserve evidence and provide post assault medications per protocol for adult and adolescent victims of sexual assault. The SANE will assist pediatric providers with forensic evidence collection and documentation for pediatric sexual assault patients. The SANE will complete mandated reporting requirements if necessary. The SANE will attend court proceedings if subpoenaed

HOURS: Occasional or .001 FTE; .08 Bi-weekly; PRN as Needed for Sane Cases

Experience/Qualifications

The SANE works under the guidance of approved policies and procedures developed by the SANE Program Coordinator and approved by the SANE Program Medical Director.The SANE is considered qualified medical personnel (QMP) per program policy and training.Ability to perform medical screenings to determine if a medical exam is needed prior to forensic exam.Coordinates care and maintains professional rapport with all members of the team and members of other disciplines involved in the care of the sexual assault patients.Coordinates referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up as needed for each patient.Performs and documents sexual assault and forensic interview accurately.Performs a complete physical and forensic evidence collection examination including Head- to-Toe assessment for trauma, detailed genital examination, forensic specimen collection and documentation, including photography, and assess for mandatory reporting status, reporting when appropriate.Documents detailed injuries accurately with support of photographic evidence.Maintains chain of custody for each sexual assault exam and adhere to evidence protocols.Maintains professional standards that do not create conflict of interests with employment or patient care, including patient and medical record confidentiality.Administers appropriate prophylactic medications per protocols.Provides testimony as a fact witness when requested by the District Attorney.Follows Aspirus policies, procedures and protocols.Knowledgeable of community resources.Ensures confidentiality of all individuals in contact with the sexual assault program at all times.Skilled in complex decision making, organization, written and verbal communication, critical thinking, and the ability to remain non-judgmental.Maintains clinical expertise as a SANE.

Department Specific Accountabilities

 Maintains department specific accountabilities as determined, maintained, and housed within each unit’s Scope of Service.Completes the initial and on-going preceptor requirements as identified by the SANE Program.Debriefs as needed to maintain emotional and physical wellness.Maintains open communication with SANE Coordinator and/or management of SANE Program on regular basis.Maintains equipment in proper working condition and exercise fiscal responsibility of unit’s resources.

Credentials:

Education

Approved training as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE).Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).

 Experience

Experience working with diverse, underserved populations.Experience as forensic nurse examiner preferred, but not required.Minimum of two (2) years’ work experience as an RN.

Required

A minimum of 4 exams per year is required to maintain skills. Mock exams can be included.Attendance at a minimum of 6 staff meetings per year.Possesses an active Wisconsin RN nursing license.Current BLS certification or obtained within 90 days of hire - All clinical personnel in identified job codes are required to maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) training through independent study, online manikin and knowledge testing. An acceptable training program is the Basic Life Support (BLS) Health Care Provider course from the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross Professional Rescuer Program with AED. (See Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Training Policy).For positions requiring ACLS and/or PALS certification - American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider Course or the American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider Course including a hands-on skills practice session with an AHA ACLS or PALS instructor or by using a voice assisted manikin (VAM) system.
