About the Role

The New York Times Well desk offers evidence-based guidance on a range of topics including mental and physical health, family and relationships. We are looking for a seasoned reporter to cover nutrition and sleep.

You will produce a mix of quick news stories along with more in-depth, researched service articles per month to help readers make informed decisions about their health. The primary beats are nutrition and sleep, but you should feel comfortable covering other aspects of health, including chronic conditions, aging and how government policy influences health. You should also be comfortable with different story formats including quizzes, explainers, visual pieces and features.

You will need to understand the intricacies and challenges of covering nutrition and sleep science and know how to stay on top of the latest research and trends. You should be an expert at reading studies, talking with researchers and summarizing findings for a lay audience in a conversational tone. You should also be brimming with ideas, have a track record of breaking news and be able to spot trends before our competitors get to them.

We are looking for precision, understanding of deadlines and the ability to work with a team, including close partnerships with editors on the desk. We expect this to be a temporary position of about 6 months.

This is an in-office position, based in New York City, and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance, but preference will be given to candidates who are based in New York City.

Basic Qualifications:

6+ years experience as a digital health reporter within a news organization Proven track record of producing best in class health journalism Passionate about health and wellness news, features, enterprise and service journalism Well-organized and experienced in reporting and writing for a variety of story forms

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience covering nutrition or sleep Experience with service journalism
