Research and Development Intern- Modeling & Simulation - Summer 2025

Role Purpose

The intern will support the research effort to build fundamental understanding of the impact of micro-deformations on the optical properties of micro-structured optical fibers. The intern will devise a modeling approach for evaluation of fiber optical performance, will implement and verify the models using optical modeling software, and will carry out simulations to generate model data for fibers under the test. The intern will be responsible for interpretation of the modeling results and making conclusions based on data. A presentation and a final technical report are expected at the end of the appointment.

Key Responsibilities

 

The intern will review the relevant prior work and will contribute to a research plan to implement and apply an optical model to evaluate the impact of micro-deformations on the optical properties of micro-structured optical fibers Learn new techniques and methods as needed to support the project objectives Work with scientists to plan and carry out required steps to progress against project objectives Support model implementation, carry simulations, document, summarize and communicate data Analyze the data and provide recommendations to the team Document the results of the research in a report and present to the team and stakeholders Experiences/Education - Required Pursuing MS or PhD in Optical Sciences, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or closely related disciplines Expertise in optical physics and modeling of wave-optics phenomena Ability to develop a hypothesis and a modeling plan to test Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively present information Experience working in a research lab and report writing Must be available for 10 weeks during Summer 2025 (May-August 2025) with a graduation date of December 2025 or later Be interested in working for Corning, Inc after graduation, if presented with a full-time job opportunity Be willing to work at the posted job location(s) Experiences/Education - Desired

This position supports immigration sponsorship. 

 

​The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly.  Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
