Role Purpose

The intern will support the development of fundamental understanding of surface chemistry and mechanical response for treated glass surfaces. The intern will conduct experiments, design test plans and explore new ways to achieve desired material attributes. In addition to experimentation, the intern will be responsible for interpretation of experimental data; comparing with literature results; and writing and presenting a final report.

Key Responsibilities

The intern will oversee performing suitable background literature searches and executing a research plan.

Document the results of the research by the end of the summer, give a final verbal presentation and write a technical report of project outputs Learn new techniques and methods as needed to support the project objectives Assist in the design of experiments, communicate observations, perform related measurements, collect, and summarize data Work with scientists to plan and carry out required experiments to advance progress against project objectives Prepare testing specimens, routine operation of standardized testing, assist with non-standard experimentation and methods development Experiences/Education - Required Pursuing PhD in Ceramic Engineering, Material Science, or Chemical Engineering, or similar discipline Ability to develop a hypothesis and an experimental plan to test Ability to build relationships and interact with team Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively present information Experience working in a research lab and report writing Must be available for 10 weeks during Summer 2025 (May-August 2025) with a graduation date of December 2025 or later Be interested in working for Corning, Inc after graduation, if presented with a full-time job opportunity.  Be willing to work at the posted job location(s) Experiences/Education - Desired Materials science Acid, Base and Ion Exchange chemistry Glass surface science and structure Mechanical testing Optical testing Vibrational Spectroscopy MATLAB, Python

​The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly.  Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
