Research and Development Scientist

POSITION LOCATION: 

This will be an on-site position working out of our South San Francisco, CA location.

POSITION SUMMARY: 

Natera is seeking a skilled and driven Scientist to join Natera’s Platform team in R&D, focusing on building scalable assays to advance our product portfolio. This role involves collaborative work in a matrixed team structure to prototype and develop genomic tests for oncology treatment and monitoring applications.  The ideal candidate will possess hands-on experience in developing NGS assays, with an emphasis on tissue RNA assays.  Candidates will apply their expertise to assess new scientific opportunities and contribute to developing state-of-the-art solutions for cancer monitoring.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Participates in project planning to support the feasibility and development of new genomics assays Leads experimental design, execution, and analysis of studies of a defined scope within the broader project plan  Independently plans and executes high-complexity experiments Interprets results and communicates actionable conclusions to project teams Proposes and tests hypotheses to address technical issues and improve assay performance  Collaborates effectively with bioinformatics, automation, and other internal team members to meet project aims Documents protocols, SOPs, and scientific reports under a Quality Management System Stays current with breakthroughs in tumor profiling, MRD detection, and cancer treatment Contributes to abstracts, manuscripts, and marketing materials

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, cellular biology, or a related field 2+ years of industry or postdoctoral research experience Strong candidates with Master’s + 6 years of experience or Bachelor’s + 8 years will also be considered

TECHNICAL SKILLS: 

Expertise in next-generation sequencing (NGS) and DNA/RNA molecular biology, including DNA/RNA extraction from tissue and biofluids, library preparation, hybrid capture, qPCR, and multiplex PCR. Proficiency in basic data and statistical analysis using tools such as R, JMP, or Excel. Proven track record of innovative research and publications in peer-reviewed journals. Strong analytical, problem-solving, technical writing, and communication skills. Hands-on experience with assay automation preferred. Bioinformatics skills, including PERL, Python, R, SQL, and data warehousing (e.g., Snowflake), are a plus. Experience in tumor profiling, transcriptomics, and NGS data analysis preferred. Experience in oncology, liquid biopsy, transplant, or NIPT research preferred. Familiarity with regulated environments and design control is a plus. The pay range is listed and actual compensation packages are based on a wide array of factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, years & depth of experience, certifications and specific office location. This may differ in other locations due to cost of labor considerations.San Carlos, CA $108,800—$156,600 USD
