Research and Technology Scientist

Hexcel is currently seeking a Research and Technology Scientist for our Salt Lake City, UT, USA location.

The selected individual will be responsible for but not limited to the following obligations:

Identify appropriate analysis techniques to characterize desired carbon fiber and precursor materials properties.Develop new chemical, electrochemical, and spectroscopic methods for analysis of carbon fiber and precursor materials.Implement developed techniques for the identification of process improvements to meet specific product specifications.Provide plant and customer support through identification and execution of appropriate chemical techniques for specific queries.Work in cross-functional teams of scientists, technicians, and engineers in product design and development programs.Directly manage technicians in a laboratory setting.

Qualifications:

PhD degree in physical organic chemistry with at least three years of direct laboratory experience in a research environment OR a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in physical organic chemistry with at least ten years of laboratory experience in a research environment.  Experience in material development and characterization is preferred.  Experience with polymers is also preferred.Ability to read, analyze, synthesize, and interpret professional and scientific journals, general business periodicals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.Ability to effectively communicate in written and oral form to diverse audiences.Knowledge of industry-standard physical and chemical techniques, including but not limited to spectroscopic techniques, microscopy, chromatography, DMA, and others.  The ability to appropriately apply these techniques to research problems.Ability to develop new chemical analyses from scientific literature, patents, and other written sources to meet specific needs.Ability to apply design of experiment concepts to hypothesis testing. Ability to perform measurement system analyses on new and existing chemical techniques.  Ability to apply statistical principles such as frequency distribution, ANOVA and regression to scientific principles. Ability to apply scientific methods and judgment to completion of assignments or directions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.Ability to deal with problems involving tangible and intangible factors in standardized and non-standardized assignments and situations.
