The Center for Governance and Markets (CGM) at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking a full-time Research Assistant to support micro-level research on the intersection of global security, economics, and development. This position is ideal for individuals considering a career in research, offering the chance to engage in high-level studies while building both qualitative and quantitative research skills. It also provides valuable experience in administrative and project management tasks.
The Research Assistant should have an interest and background in the political economy of development. Responsibilities include conducting literature reviews, synthesizing data for academic and policy outputs, and supporting the collection and analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data from field research.
Key tasks include analyzing interviews, managing survey data collection, and coding data using qualitative analysis software (e.g., NVIVO, Atlas.ti, or MaxQDA). Quantitative analysis will involve the use of statistical software (e.g., Stata or R) to analyze datasets related. The position may also include opportunities to assist with managing and conducting qualitative field research in regions such as Latin America, Central Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Sub-Saharan Africa.
This position is funded 100% from sponsored/non-university funds.
Required Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as political science, economics, sociology, international development, or related discipline.Strong analytical, communication, and writing skills.The ability to conduct literature reviews and synthesize findings for academic or policy-related outputs.Strong organizational and project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with the political economy of development or similar academic fields, strongly preferred.Coursework in qualitative and quantitative research methods, and experience with statistical software.A background in qualitative and quantitative research methods, including experience with data collection and management from fieldwork, including surveys, interviews, or other sources. Experience with statistical software such as Stata, R, or SPSS.Proficiency in qualitative data analysis tools such as NVIVO, Atlas.ti, or MaxQDA.International fieldwork experience or exposure to research in regions such as Latin America, Central Asia, Eastern Europe, or Sub-Saharan Africa.Language skills in relevant regional languages, such as Spanish, Russian, or French, are a plus but not required.Coordinates protocol-related research procedures, activities, outreach, and education.
