Position Summary

As part of the Faculty of Engineering’s Office of E-IDEA (Engineering Inclusivity, Diversity, and Equity Advancement), the E-IDEA Teamwork Program partners with faculty and staff to support interpersonal skills development and foster a practical understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusivity (EDI) in the engineering, architecture, and urban planning professions. The Research Assistant (Course Stream) works collaboratively with a team of Learning and Development Specialists to make contributions to the field of engineering education by conducting research on inclusive pedagogy, teamwork, and leadership within engineering curricula and various team environments. The overall aim of the research is to develop recommended practices for integrating EDI and interpersonal skills into engineering education.

Tasks and Duties

Under the supervision of the E-IDEA Manager and with the guidance of the Teamwork Program Lead, the Research Assistant (Course Stream) engages in the following:

Continuous learning: Staying abreast of new developments in EDI, accessibility, and STEM education. Investigating and updating pedagogical approaches and recommended practices as informed by engineering education research.Design and facilitation: Researching EDI considerations in technical STEM environments and using these findings to design and facilitate EDI and interpersonal skill-building workshops in undergraduate and graduate courses. Expanding E-IDEA’s library of accessible resources and tools to support the professional development of instructors and students.Data collection and analysis: Applying established methods to collect, analyze, and report student data. Assisting with longitudinal research protocols to assess program impact. Contributing to periodic program evaluation and iteration.Research dissemination: Participating in conferences and academic networks to share program outcomes, knowledge, and practices. Conducting literature reviews and contributing to academic publications.

QualificationsBachelor’s degree in STEM education or another relevant discipline with work experience designing accessible and inclusive pedagogy in STEM

Other Qualifying Skills & AbilitiesStrong foundation in intersectional education and applied principles of social equity, diversity, inclusivity, and accessibilityAt least two years of demonstrated experience effectively engaging and collaborating with diverse populationsAdvanced facilitation and communication skills, including experience leading online and hybrid sessions over ZoomProficient in Microsoft Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and citation management software (e.g., EndNote) for managing data, presentations, and other documentationStrong teamwork and interpersonal skillsExcellent time management skills and ability to balance independent and collaborative tasksKnowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 3 (Advanced) on a scale of 0-4.
