ADM Edible Bean Specialties is seeking a research assistant to support the development of market leading dry bean and lima bean varieties. Under the direction of the assistant plant breeder, the research assistant is responsible for conducting daily operations of the bean breeding program and nuclear seed stock production. Assist with harvest, seed handling and processing, seed treating and packaging, greenhouse production, housekeeping, and general maintenance.
Responsibilities of the research assistant:Follow all research program safety policies and procedures to ensure that the research team is operating in a safe manner at all timesAssist with various aspects of the breeding program, including: crossing, trait screening, selection, variety advancement, data collection, data entry, greenhouse production, early generation nurseries, yield trials, etc.Assist with quality control of nuclear seed stock production (color breaks, thorough cleanouts, plot rogueing, bean picking, variety purification, etc.)Able to meet physical requirements of the position including, but not limited to: prolonged periods of standing and sitting, walking long distances, working in confined spaces and from heights, bending, kneeling, climbing stairs and ladders, working in a variety of conditions (heat, cold, dust, etc.), move up to 55 pounds, as well as the ability to wear a respiratorOperate research mill and farm equipmentTreating and packaging of seed stock and test plot seed for cooperative trials and nurseriesHelp maintain warehouse space where seed and equipment are storedHelp maintain an accurate seed inventory of all breeding program seed and nuclear seed stocks, and collect seed samples for lab testingEquipment operator: forklift, tractor, tractor implements, research equipment, and hauling equipment on trailersBasic equipment maintenance: seed box repairs, farm equipment, tractors, mill, greenhouseWillingness to work overtime and weekends, as neededADM requires the successful completion of a background check.
