Essential functions (job duties): Perform laboratory based scientific techniques or clinical/population science (human subjects) research. Design and perform experiments, recruit participants for studies by developing surveys and interviewing candidates. Participate in implementing research objectives, ensuring compliance with all legal, regulatory and protocol guidelines. Assist staff with experiments/research protocols as required. Communicate with principal investigator and Postdoctoral scholars/fellows on the status of research. Collect and log laboratory results, clinical outcomes and/or survey data. Evaluate and perform data analysis using graphs, charts or tables to highlight the key points of the research results collected in accordance with the research protocols as stipulated. Proofread and edit research data and documents to ensure accuracy. Assist principal investigator with writing methods and summarizing/organizing data to be used in preparing and presenting presentations for professional, scientific and academic conferences and submittal to academic and scholarly peer-reviewed journals. Maintain the laboratory work areas including routine maintenance on laboratory equipment as required. Order and organize required research supplies and records. Maintain cleanliness and organization of work station. Perform other related duties as assigned. Unique duties: The Trauma History Investigation of Neurodevelopment in Kids (THINK) Lab at Wayne State University, directed by Dr. Hilary Marusak, is seeking a full-time Research Assistant. The THINK Lab (wsuthinklab.com) focuses on the effects of stress and trauma on brain development in youth, along with the impact of cannabinoids on the developing brain. Our research addresses issues such as anxiety, suicidal ideation, and PTSD in children and adolescents. We use a range of neuroscientific techniques, including: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), Genotyping, Blood and salivary biomarkers, and Psychophysiology. Our studies also explore behavioral and pharmacological interventions like exercise, cannabinoids, and mindfulness to improve mental health outcomes in youth. Duties may include: Participant Recruitment and Management: Engage in recruitment efforts, which may involve interaction with participants in schools, clinics, or community organizations in Detroit. Coordinate recruitment events and oversee the recruitment team. Scheduling and Communication: Manage scheduling, communications (e.g., email, phone, text), and assessments for research studies. Protocol Development: Assist with setting up protocols, procedures, and equipment for studies. Data Collection and Analysis: Conduct data collection and analysis for research protocols involving adults, children, adolescents, and parents/caregivers in both in-person and virtual settings. Data collection may include surveys, behavioral assessments, MRI/PET scanning, clinical interviews, and biological samples (blood, saliva, urine), as well as EEG, EMG, SCR, etc. Data Management: Archive, organize, process, and analyze research data. Lab Management: Assist with lab management duties, including supervising, coordinating, and training staff, students, and other lab members. Collaboration: Communicate and coordinate with collaborators and partner organizations (e.g., MRI Facility, Wayne Pediatrics). Advertising: Post advertisements and flyers both in person and online. IRB Documentation: Prepare IRB documentation and submissions in collaboration with the PI and/or other research team members. Lab Maintenance: Handle laboratory maintenance tasks, including finances, inventory, computer maintenance, and cleaning. Meetings: Attend and participate in team and lab meetings. Assist with scheduling laboratory meetings. Other: Lab and research-related duties as assigned. Qualifications: Education: Bachelor's degree Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study, preferred. Requires advanced knowledge predominantly intellectual in character in a field of science or learning acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction. Experience: Entry level (less that a year of job-related experience) Experience performing basic research techniques or interacting with human subjects, preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to work independently. Ability to analyze, summarize and interpret research findings and data in reports and spreadsheets and communicate results. Knowledge of scientific integrity principles. Excellent time management and organization skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative environment. Microsoft office software skills. Preferred qualifications: Educational Background: Preferred bachelor's degree in neuroscience, psychology, cognitive science, social work, biology, computer science, engineering, education, or a related field. Initiative and Adaptability: Able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously with minimal supervision. The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team. Candidates are able to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment. Communication and Professionalism: Preferred written and verbal communication skills, professionalism, strong organizational and time management skills, and attention to detail. Technical Skills: Preferred proficiency in computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and willingness to learn and work with additional programs (e.g., REDCap, Ripple). Preferred Experience: Experience in human subjects research is preferred. Additional experience in IRB submissions/communications, coding or programming (e.g., Python, Matlab), statistical software (e.g., SPSS, R), psychological experiment software (e.g., Presentation), fMRI analysis software (e.g., AFNI), publications, conference presentations, data management, and/or phlebotomy is a plus.
