Research Assistant - Mechanical Engineering

In addition, they are using their expertise in interdisciplinary research centers across the university.

Carnegie Mellon University’s department of Mechanical Engineering is searching for a Research Assistant to join their team.  This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by working on a robotic project to develop an autonomous wearable robotic hip exoskeleton that can enhance mobility for diverse set of clinical users. This research will leverage physics engine-based simulation and deep reinforcement learning to optimize user-specific exoskeleton control parameters without needing to fine-tune experimentally.

Your core responsibilities will include:

Communicating and updating research progress to the supervisor on a daily or weekly basis.

Mentoring undergraduate student researchers in the lab for technical assistance.

Developing a musculoskeletal model of a human-exoskeleton system.

Making a reinforcement learning-based human agent capable of walking in diverse settings.

Designing a sim2real transfer pipeline to deploy exoskeleton control parameter optimized in simulation.

Other duties as assigned.

You should demonstrate:

Strong verbal and written communication skills

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required.  Master’s degree preferred in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, robotics or biomedical engineering (or a related discipline, such as bioengineering).

Expertise and background knowledge in at least one of the following areas that are relevant for the position: mechatronics, AI/ML, optimization of wearable robotic control, and/or biomechanics.
