Research Assistant - Term

The Research Assistant - Term will assist Professor Larry Schumaker in continuing research on the use of splines to solve Elliptic boundary-value problems on curved domains in 3D and in preparing research papers on the subject.

The Department of Mathematics at Vanderbilt University combines the friendly and supportive atmosphere of a liberal arts college with the excitement and challenge of forefront research. These research programs are at the cutting edge of traditional areas of mathematics as well as being a major contributor to contemporary interdisciplinary institutions and centers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Search the literature to identify published papers relevant to the research While studying such papers, implementing related methods in Matlab Continuing to develop Matlab code for project’s new methods Constructing and preparing examples of such new methods Preparing related manuscripts for publication Be available to meet with Prof. Schumaker on campus on a regular basis Other duties as assigned

 

Supervisory Relationships:

This position has no supervisory responsibility. This position reports functionally to Professor Larry Schumaker & administratively to the department Administrative Manager.

 

Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics Be well-versed in numerical analysis and approximation with splines Have an understanding of numerical methods for partial differential equations
