Diabetes Research Institute has an exciting opportunity for a full time Research Associate 1, SOM position. The incumbent supports research activities for the assigned division by conducting laboratory experiments on assigned research projects. Moreover, the incumbent operates with the goal of advancing his/her expertise through continued education, training, and research.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

Participates in the publication of significant results.
Maintains an overview of relevant research findings.
Ensures all research is undertaken according to good research practice.
Keeps abreast of current publications relative to methods, techniques, and developments within the area of research.
Collects, prepares, analyzes, dissects, and evaluates specimens or tissue cultures.
Operates and maintains laboratory equipment.
Performs a variety of routine assays, tests, and studies.
Performs calculations to complete research test results, collects data, and performs statistical analysis of laboratory results.
Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field required
Prior lab experience required
Department Specific Functions
DRI related duties include but are not limited to:
Excellent planification and organizational skills. Excellent communication skills: communicates effectively with supervisor and colleagues. Reads and understands data sheets of lab products, reagents and materials. Follows safety recommendations in handling lab products, reagents and materials. Follows EH&S and UM safety recommendations and appropriately handles lab waste. Knows how to operate routine basic instruments such as centrifuges, shakers, water baths, balances, inverted microscopes, etc. Operates more complex instruments such as flow cytometers, confocal microscopes and other advanced microscopes and slide scanners. When needed, receives training of any new technique or to operate new instruments when appropriate. Additionally, explores available resources online and at the DRI or UM when appropriate to learn and improve its operation. Prepares buffers and other routinary lab reagents. Follows routinary lab protocols independently and performs routinary experiments independently. Analyzes routinary results of experiments when appropriate. Presents results in lab meetings when appropriate. Participates in other more complex lab experiments supporting the team when needed. Participates in development of protocols and SOPs. Maintains appropriate logs, records, and study notebooks: keeps online and physical documentation related to experiments, lab activities, protocols, SOPs and procedures. Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment: including inventories for chemicals, cells, tissues, and antibodies etc, following UM requirements when applicable. Orders laboratory supplies and maintains culture media reagents: keeps record of lab orders (online and physical), follows up on pending orders, finds suitable products for the lab when appropriate, etc. In case any incidence occurs, whether administrative or in the lab, works on promptly remediating it and communicates with the supervisor and other UM departments if appropriate in a timely manner. Participates in lab organization, lab cleaning and other lab maintenance activities when appropriate.
