The Marine Biology and Ecology Department at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science has an exciting full time opportunity for a Research Associate 1. The successful candidate will work in the CRFL’s Experimental Hatchery which is an ex-situ, land-based coral nursery that makes use of available sunlight and local seawater to promote a controlled aquatic environment conducive to the accelerated growth of Floridian-native corals.

Responsibilities for this position include the creation and coordination of daily/weekly aquarium husbandry lists, as well as the training and supervision of a team of volunteer students to carry out the upkeep of various coral systems. Corals are complicated creatures, and as such they require detailed, meticulous care as well as the replication of crucial environmental parameters.

Applicants are required to work 40-45 hours per week, ~80% of which will be outdoors. As such, please be aware that Miami’s weather can be both unpredictable and at times extreme. It is important to note that sun-protective clothing and head coverage via sunhat or hooded shirt are required. Be prepared to work 4-5 hours at a time outdoors. Applicants should also on occasion be prepared to work hours outside of the regular business work week, as they are accountable for the response to equipment failures, as well as involvement in nighttime spawning watches.

A Bachelors Degree is required. Favorable applicants have a background in aquaculture or related field, as well as knowledge of aquarium husbandry. Those applicants that have prior experience with reef aquariums or the care of corals are preferred. When working with live animals, the importance of accountability and communication cannot be overstated. The ability to work well with others, paired with the capability to diagnose and delegate duties related to plumbing, electrical, or other operational obstacles is essential. Dive certified (AAUS certified) preferred but not required. Though not included in regular job activities, boating experience is also keenly sought.
