Research Associate for Lyme Disease Research Center
Specific Duties and Responsibilities: - Establishes and implements robust core infrastructure aligned with institutional and departmental policies and regulations, to include: o Manage and supervise operation of Mesoscale instrument and establish necessary controls for data entry into iLabs o Ensuring satisfactory biospecimen collection, processing, freezer management and backup, and distribution of samples to the Lyme Center investigators and related JHU and external collaborators o Coordinating database efforts to include management of retrospective and prospective bio specimen data entry and responsibility for inventory control systems - Independently manage biorepository components of the Lyme Disease Research Center including current and future funding from Foundation and NIH grants - Supervise technologist's blood sample processing from clinical specimens and performance of mesoscale and ELISA assays. - Maintain systems for culture of Borrelia burgdorferi and isolation of bacteria for use in immunologic assays Supervisory Responsibility: - Directly responsible for 2 research technologists Minimum Qualifications: - Master's or PhD (preferred) in Microbiology, Immunology or related field - Two or moreyears of lab-related experience - Experience in supervision or show potential/promise to do so - Demonstrated ability via a significant graduate project or additional doctoral/post-doctoral training may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: - Ability to implement and manage a wide range of laboratory procedures such as western blot, PCR, ELISA, and culture of microorganisms such as borrelia. - Excellent communication skills to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, including healthcare professionals and decision-makers - Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams, including clinicians and basicresearchers. - Meticulous attention to detail to ensure the accuracy and reliability of specimen inventory system - Strong ethical considerations, particularly regarding patient data privacy and the ethical use of data in medical research Salary: $60,000-$75,000 Additional Information Salary Range The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. The actual compensation offered to the selected candidate may vary and will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, internal equity, market conditions, education/training and other factors, as reasonably determined by the University. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
