Research Associate I
Description: Job Summary:

We are seeking an enthusiastic, communicative, and detail-oriented individual to work as a field interviewer for our Life Course/Cognitive Aging Research Group. This interviewer may work across any one of our active field studies but will likely specialize in the recruitment and retention of aging Black participants in the Oakland and Berkeley areas for the Study of Healthy Aging in African Americans (STAR). The ideal candidate will be someone committed to furthering research in ethnically and racially diverse aging populations. Our field studies seek to evaluate how early-life conditions influence racial and ethnic differences in dementia rates, and to understand risk factors for cognitive decline later in life. The 3 field studies include: Study of Healthy Aging in African Americans (STAR), Kaiser Healthy Aging and Diverse Life Experiences (KHANDLE), and Life After 90 (LA90).


The RAI will screen, recruit and schedule participants for clinic- and home-based in-person interviews. The RAI will administer a structured interview including a detailed questionnaire about life experiences, a cognitive test battery, and the collection of physical measurements.  The RAI will also assist with in-office administrative support for the team as needed in the Division of Research located in Pleasanton, CA. The interviewer should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a professional telephone manner. Evening and weekend work required (as recruitment dictates) to accommodate working participants. This may require regular communication with participants in the early evening and ability to complete study visits outside of regular working hours.



Coordinates small scale project(s) e.g., less than one year, under 100k annually. Works under general supervision. Final review required for each phase of assignment.



Essential Responsibilities:

Coordinates recruitment of participants and develops information packets for the participants. Monitors and tracks participant progress throughout the project and provides follow-up as needed.  Assists with development of research instruments. Trains research assistants.
Edits and manipulates data; performs data manipulation to produce progress reports including basic statistical analyses. Maintains project records & reports.  Reviews literature relating to research project.  May conduct detailed, complex in-person or telephone interviews. May be responsible for data quality assurance.  May coordinate small scale research projects.

Secondary Functions: 



Must have own car, valid driver?s license and travel throughout the Bay Area.
Must be able to lift up to 25lbs.
Schedule will vary on dept needs.

Basic Qualifications:
Experience

Minimum one (1) year of experience in one or more of the technical areas required - Professional certification (e.g., RN, RHIT, RD, etc.) may substitute for one (1) year of experience.

High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

License, Certification, Registration

Additional Requirements:

Experience with interviewing & chart review.
Basic knowledge of questionnaire design & simple data analysis & interpretation.
Knowledge of computer applications, such as word processing, spreadsheet design, & database applications.
Familiar with medical terminology.
Must be able to work in Labor/ Management Partnership environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor degree in public health, health care administration, epidemiology or other related field preferred, OR four (4) years of experience in a directly related field.
Able to lift 25lbs on a daily basis when needed
Must have own car, valid driver’s license and be willing to travel throughout the Bay Area.
Evening and weekend work required (as recruitment dictates).
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
Experience working with recruitment and retention in diverse communities.
Ability to maintain meticulous organization of study related documents
