Posting Details Job Title Research (Associate) Professor in the Department of Clinical and Translational Sciences| (Non-Tenure Track , Position F1086A) Department AI CLUSTER HIRE INITIATIVE Position Number F1086A1 Job Description The Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University is searching for a candidate to join its research faculty as a Research (Associate) Professor in the Department of Clinical and Translational Sciences as part of a multiple-position hiring initiative for “AI-Infused Connected/Autonomous Systems for Medicine and Health Care”. Beginning in Fall 2025, this research faculty appointment will work with other research faculty and across data science teams to lead the development of data science/AL/ML theory and applications to the broad area of connected autonomous systems with strong focus on medicine and public health. These areas include but are not limited to: + Solutions for remote patient monitoring. + Autonomous diagnostics. + Public health monitoring. + Smart health facilities. + Early detection. + Prediction. + Advanced imaging. + Other biomedical and clinical interests and disciplines. Candidates will be expected to develop and maintain a vibrant, externally funded interdisciplinary research program in machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), reinforcement learning (RL), and data science/advanced computing, with highly focused applications in the biomedical sciences, medicine, and public health. The candidate is expected to focus on the development of a significant externally funded research program. Collaboration with other faculty in the School of Data Science, the Batten College of Engineering, the Hampton Road Biomedical Research Consortium ( HRBRC ) and the Joint Institute on Advanced Computing for Environmental Studies, and data scientists and practitioners in the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences ( BVHS , formerly EVMS ) is expected. Position Type FullTime Type of Recruitment General Public Type of Recruitment General Public Minimum required education and/or special licenses, registrations, trainings, or certifications A Ph.D. or equivalent in data science, computer science, machine learning, engineering, physics, calculus, mathematics, clinical health, biomedical health, or biological sciences or a closely related field is required. Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities At least one year of research publication in competitive, highly visible, peer-reviewed journals. Preferred Qualifications + Experience in data science, machine learning, AI, biological engineering, or a related field, at an academic institution or a national lab. + A sustained publication record and/or experience with grant-funded research. + Candidates for associate/full research professor position must demonstrate a sustained record in research and externally funded grants, as well as the ability to interact and communicate clearly with internal and external constituencies.
