CAREER OPPORTUNITY

The R&D group at Smurfit Westrock Richmond, VA location has exciting Internship/co-op opportunities for STEM-based students.  The Intern/co-op will be expected to complete a meaningful R&D project with potential study areas of pulping, papermaking, structural mechanics (fiber physics), Recycling/circularity, coating, barriers, and packaging-based areas.  Students will be involved in team projects, and will have opportunities to learn about industrial R&D, paperboard production, and packaging needs.  The work will be closely tied to business units and mill manufacturing needs.  

 

HOW YOU WILL IMPACT SMURFIT WESTROCK

Contribute to the development of innovative methods and materials for pulping, papermaking, structural mechanics (fiber physics), Recycling/circularity, coating, barriers, and packaging based areas based on project and business needs.  This typically involves literature reviews, value proposition and business case forming to justify your research and reporting of results (written and oral).  R&D deploys several tools to facilitate success including numerical and mas & energy balance capabilities, test method development and access to paper, paperboard and packaging test equipment, pilot level small commercial sized equipment,  design and fabrication, and experiment planning with potential for implementation and trials in our manufacturing plants. 

 

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED

Rising juniors and seniors pursuing a degree in the STEM fields with a strong curiosity and an entrepreneurial spirt.  It requires scientific knowledge, hands-on skills, and the ability to analyze and report results.  Strong drive to work in teams while being a strong individual contributor.  An individual that is a self-starter and has a strong drive for results should apply.
