Research Engineer II

Located on the University of Pittsburgh Main Campus, the PET Research Center benefits from its central location to the major clinical and research activities of the institution. Presently, the center comprises a dedicated full time research staff of approximately 25, including ten full-time Radiology faculty members. The staff also includes nuclear medicine fellows, post-docs and radiochemistry technicians. The PET Research Center maintains an array of dedicated research scanners and equipment. Although the emphasis of the research facilities is on neuroimaging initiatives, a growing component of research in oncology and other systemic disorders continues to diversify its research efforts.

Assists with designing, fabricating, and maintaining research instrumentation. Assists with the development of conceptual project design and instrumentation, software programs, and data collection methods. Assists with conducting research. Conducts laboratory procedures, develops software for analysis, and implements robotic equipment protocols. Coordinates work of students and interns.

Responsible for operation and first-line maintenance of medical cyclotron (high-energy radiation producing equipment) and auxiliary devices and systems (e.g., targets, RF, vacuum, power supplies, detectors, extraction systems, ion sources) in cooperation with vendor field service engineers to reliably produce radioisotopes for the positron emission tomography radiochemistry facility for clinical research (human subjects) studies. Performs preventive maintenance and repair of various highly specialized chemistry apparatus and also designs and manufactures new small laboratory devices as needed. Responsibilities will also include monitoring facility infrastructure (power, chiller, air-conditioning, humidifier, etc.) function, provide first-line response for system malfunction, coordinate vendor service engineer and campus facility services responses, and planning and coordination of facility upgrades and new instrument installation with industry engineers, campus facility services, and university architects. Ensures the documentation of maintenance and QA activities. Operates under the general supervision of the PET Center Director Director.
