Research Intern – Health Promotion & Behavior Change

**Job Overview:**
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented research intern to join our dynamic team focused on health promotion and behavior change, particularly among underserved populations. This internship offers an exceptional educational opportunity for academic credit, providing in-depth exposure to clinical and community-based research. The intern will work closely with Dr. Shirazipour and the research team on a range of research activities that contribute to important findings on health behavior change in cancer survivors and underserved communities (e.g., individuals with disabilities, unhoused populations).
Through this role, the intern will develop valuable skills in research methodologies, data analysis, and scientific communication, with the potential for at least one peer-reviewed publication and/or presentation upon successful completion of the internship.
**Key Responsibilities:**
+ **Developing Marketing Research Materials:** Assist in creating materials that support the research projects, such as surveys, questionnaires, and promotional content.
+ **Conducting Quantitative and Qualitative Data Analysis:** Support the analysis of research data, utilizing both quantitative tools and qualitative coding methods.
+ **Drafting Community-Friendly Tools:** Collaborate with the team to create accessible materials that translate complex research findings for the lab and community audiences.
+ **Contributing to Presentations and Publications:** Assist in drafting research findings for presentations, posters, and publications that contribute to the body of knowledge on health promotion and behavior change.
+ **Literature Reviews:** Conduct literature searches and assist in systematic reviews relevant to health promotion and behavior change among underserved populations.
+ **Scientific Manuscript Development:** Learn the fundamentals of developing and formatting scientific manuscripts, from initial drafts to final submissions.
**Goals and Objectives:**
At the start of the internship, the intern will work with Dr. Shirazipour to define a timeline, mentoring plan, and key milestones. Regular meetings with Dr. Shirazipour, as well as weekly lab and team meetings, will provide structured guidance and promote collaboration.
**Key learning objectives include:**
1. Gaining insight into the academic research process and its application to health promotion.
2. Developing proficiency in both qualitative and quantitative research methods and analyses.
3. Building content expertise in health promotion and behavior change, particularly among cancer survivors, underserved populations, and program leaders.
4. Acquiring skills in scientific manuscript development and formatting.
5. Learning how to conduct literature searches and systematic reviews for relevant topics.
6. Effectively communicating research findings through oral presentations and poster sessions.
**Commitment and Expectations:**
+ **Duration:** The internship requires a minimum commitment of six months, with a preference for interns willing to commit for 12 months.
+ **Time Commitment:** During the academic year, the intern is expected to commit 15 hours per week, with the possibility of increasing to 40 hours per week during the summer.
+ **Poster Presentation:** Upon completing the internship, the intern will be expected to present their project at a Cedars-Sinai-sponsored research event.
+ **Progress Monitoring:** The intern’s progress will be tracked based on effort, milestone completion, research skills development, and growing independence. Dr. Shirazipour will provide progress reports to the intern’s academic institution if required.
**Qualifications:**
+ Currently enrolled in an academic program (e.g., Public Health, Social Sciences, Behavioral Science, or a related field).
+ Interest in health promotion, behavior change, and working with underserved populations.
+ Basic knowledge of research methods (both qualitative and quantitative) is desirable.
+ Strong communication skills, with the ability to write clearly and present ideas effectively.
+ Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
+ Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research setting.
