The Smithfield Foods internship program offers students a paid opportunity to train in an environment that fosters real-life experiences, explores career options, and applies your education. A Research Internship involves being responsible for collecting data and samples as outlined in protocols for research trials. This position also monitors and cares for animals on research trials.
Core ResponsibilitiesTrains daily in a swine facility gaining a general understanding of processes and how these processes interrelate to overall company efforts in swine production.
Engaged under the supervision of the appropriate department leader while learning/performing duties and responsibilities of a particular function.
A Research intern works daily on research farm; including tagging, weighing and moving pigs of all sizes; collects blood samples and oral fluids; vaccinates animals; implements and follows all protocols for each research trial; including recording all necessary data; performs and masters all methods of data collection; including operating individual scales.
Responsible for being in compliance with all environmental laws and procedures to which Smithfield Hog Production Division subscribes
Report all environmental issues immediately to their supervisor
Read and understand the company’s emergency notification process and will be responsible for reviewing that policy at their work site
Performs all duties as defined by supervisor

Must be working toward a degree from a regionally accredited college or university or a recent graduate. Agriculture related majors preferred
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
Willingness to learn and work in a team environment

Strong time, project, and organizational management skills
Ability to work independently as well as with others in a fast paced, dynamic environment.
Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
Must be able to walk and stand on concrete for 9 to 12 hours per day, walking down narrow alleys and in and out of narrow penning.
Must be able to work an average 48 hour week which includes weekends and holidays
Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs, do frequent stooping, bending, and climbing
Must shower in and out of farm facilities daily
Frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.
Must be able to work with and around a wide range of antibiotics (i.e. penicillin).
Must be able to tolerate blood, animal dander, manure, dust, odors, and frequently noisy conditions.
