Research Laboratory Manager
The primary purpose of the Laboratory Manager position is to provide responsible supervision, special training and technical management in laboratory operations, which includes the authority to hire and evaluate performance. The Laboratory Manager should oversee the capabilities of the laboratory to address scientific questions based on the PI and other scientific personnel in the laboratory and will recommend changes as necessary. This will include management and dynamic planning of fiscal, administrative and scientific duties of a laboratory facility.

KEY FUNCTIONS:

Administrative:

* Conduct interviews with applicants for new positions in the lab. Assists with evaluations.

* Determines staffing needs and schedules personnel to provide adequate coverage.

* Assists with preparation of grant applications as requested by lab investigators. Provides estimates to investigators regarding needs and cost of personnel, equipment and supplies over the period of proposed grant.

* Acts as property controller for all inventoried laboratory equipment. Maintains and updates equipment manuals and records.

* Visually monitors inventories of consumable common supplies and replaces depleted items in a timely fashion to ensure continuity in lab experimental procedures. Reviews and approves requests for new common supplies and implements purchases when necessary. Works closely with and maintains open communication with departmental buyer.

* Maintains communication with all laboratory investigators. Assists in coordinating collaborative issues among the laboratory investigators and their respective employees. Carries out requests from investigators as deemed appropriate.

* Acts as contact between Research Facilities and laboratories. Reports facilities-related problems to Research Facilities and provides follow-up. Initiates and completes work request forms for specific changes ore repairs and provides cost estimates to investigators.

* Reviews and makes recommendations for purchasing based on anticipated workload. Works with vendors to insure availability of newest laboratory products. Negotiates with vendors for best pricing on supplies and equipment.

* Recommends and expedites replacement or purchase of new equipment. Investigates the need for new or replaced equipment and obtains quotes. Coordinates with vendor the delivery, installation and personnel training of new equipment.

* Makes recommendations on the advisability of service contracts for major common equipment, oversees, and manages service contracts.

* Facilitates the completion of the lab continuing review. Ensures the protocol continuing review process is compliant with all applicable regulations.

Laboratory:

* Manages overall functions of the GU Medical Oncology Research Lab including but not limited to the following: specimen collection and processing, equipment, supply and inventory reconciliation, and protocol/project management.

* Oversees all operations of the laboratory to ensure they all align with the scientific direction of the laboratory.

* Supervise the activities of laboratory personnel to ensure safety and scientific rigor in the studies performed in the laboratory including studies with laboratory animals.

* Directly train and oversees training of laboratory personnel including graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty.

* Develop or supervise the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for new protocols.

* Perform, teaches and/or supervises experiments involving manipulation of laboratory animals such as mice and perform interventional procedures such as injections/orchiectomy.

* Design and interpret preclinical studies and/or improve on a current system for pre-clinical testing of drugs.

* Assists with the patient derived model development as needed by laboratory staff.

* Be the primary contact for the laboratory and oversee those using the laboratory.

* Responsible for all new staff onboarding, including safety orientations. Gives tours of the laboratory to visitors.

* Reviews laboratory SOP. Trains and supervises personnel on established methods. Evaluates/revises SOPs as indicated.

* Ensures laboratory operations are effective and meet the needs of the department, investigators, industry sponsors, and other key stakeholders.

* Consults with investigators, collaborators, industry representatives, and commercial vendors to modify or develop sample collection and processing procedures.

* Conducts research with little to no supervision. Participates in the design and execution of experiments using biochemical, molecular, and biological assays some of which may involve radioisotopes or known carcinogens or mutagens. Assays may include Northern, Southern, or Western analyses, enzyme assays, molecular cloning, protein purification and flow cytometry.

* With the Principal Investigator (PI) designs and reviews protocol specific procedures. Modifies and/or develops new techniques.

* Ensures that laboratory is prepared for isotope inspections and safety accreditation.

* Demonstrates and practices laboratory safety precautions. Provides verbal and/or written instructions to lab personnel on standards and specialized lab safety procedures. Develops new safety protocols as needed. Attends annual safety courses required by MDACC and others as necessary.

* Supervised the handling of radioisotopes, chemically hazardous materials, and biohazardous materials in procedures specified to meet MDACC safety guidelines. Maintains and updates laboratory safety notebooks (MSDS, Emergency plan, Radiation certificates, Safety plan, Isotope disposal, Wipe tests, Chemical Hygiene plan, Radiation plan).

* Oversees daily maintenance of all laboratory equipment. Supervises the upkeep and organization of common equipment areas. Oversees the instruction of proper use and care of all common equipment. Oversees and facilitates repairs and maintenance of equipment as problems arise and/or as necessary with vendor, Biomedical Engineering or biosafety.

* Supervises tissue culture facilities, the development, and implementation of policies for this area, and the policing of infractions. Monitors quality control of any prepared items as well as the purchasing and maintaining of equipment in this area.

* Maintains meticulous records of experimental data and protocols.

* Maintain procedures and protocols to ensure the quality and integrity of the procedures performed.

Maintains a level of professional expertise

* Coordinates laboratory education activities including sharing information relevant to the professional development of each laboratory personnel.

* Requires and encourages lab personnel to take safety courses and any other courses that may benefit them in their job duties. Plans and supervises the training of lab personnel (technicians, students, post-docs, fellows) with respect to proper laboratory techniques, use of laboratory equipment and supplies and safety procedures. Coordinates with the appropriate MDACC offices to provide specialized courses when needed.

EDUCATION:
Required: Bachelor's degree.

Preferred: Master's degree.

EXPERIENCE:
Required: Seven years experience in scientific, research or clinical laboratory, to include four years in a supervisory/managerial capacity. With preferred degree, five years of required experience to include four years in a supervisory/managerial capacity. Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate and/or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience. Completion of both programs can be substituted for a maximum of two years of supervisory or management experience.

Preferred: Experience in a scientific research laboratory and in responsible supervisory and management role. Experience in patient-derived models resource and ability to co-manage lab and program operations at a successful productive level to advance research projects and secure funding.
