Research Programs Coordinator - Advanced Laboratory for Chemical and Isotopic Signatures - CUNY Advanced Science Research Center **POSITION DETAILS** The City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center is the hub of advanced teaching and research for the nation’s largest urban public university system. Home to more than 30 research institutes and centers, including the Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC), the Graduate Center supports interdisciplinary research in fields critical to public well-being, environmental sustainability, and innovation. Located in upper Manhattan, the ASRC is a 200,000-square-foot facility designed to foster collaboration among scientists in five interdisciplinary initiatives: nanoscience, photonics, structural biology, neuroscience, and environmental sciences. Within the Environmental Sciences Initiative, the Advanced Laboratory for Chemical and Isotopic Signatures (ALCIS)serves as a shared core facility offering advanced analytical capabilities for projects in environmental chemistry, geochemistry, soil science, paleoceanography, and ecology. The ASRC seeks a full-time Research Programs Coordinator to support the administrative function and technical operations of ALCIS. This position reports to the ASRC’s Director of Operations. The lab specializes in high-precision measurements of stable isotope ratios and organic chemical characterizations in environmental matrixes. Instruments include Thermo Scientific MAT-253 Plus and Delta V Plus isotope ratio mass spectrometers with multiple peripherals (e.g., Kiel carbonate device, GC IsoLink, TCEA, Gas Bench, PreCon), a Shimadzu GCMS, Py-GCMS, and an AIRSight FTIR/Raman microscope. Sample preparation is supported by a Dionex ASE 350 solvent extractor, Labconco RapidVap, high-resolution micromill, precision microbalances, and other supporting infrastructure. ALCIS operates as a CUNY-wide service center and provides essential support to researchers both internal and external to the university. The coordinator will support the lab’s operations, maintaining instrumentation readiness, assisting with compliance efforts, and facilitating research workflows through user support, scheduling, reporting, and training coordination. This position requires the incumbent to work in person. **Duties include but are not limited to:** **Research Program Administration** + Supports the management of ALCIS’s service center operations, including procurement, tracking of research expenditures, and coordination of cost recovery for instrumentation use. + Maintains and monitors budgets for ongoing research projects and service accounts in coordination with ASRC administrative staff. + Prepares, edits, and distributes fiscal and programmatic reports for internal tracking, external stakeholders, and funding agencies. + Collaborates with Environmental Health and Safety personnel to ensure laboratory safety, compliance, and training documentation is up to date. **Operational and Infrastructure Coordination** + Responsible for routine aspects of laboratory operations such as sample intake, inventory control, instrument scheduling, and consumables restocking. + Provides support for the operation, maintenance, and performance monitoring of advanced instrumentation including gas chromatographs and mass spectrometers. + Coordinates vendor service for instrument calibration and repair; maintains documentation for preventative maintenance and performance checks. + Drafts and maintains SOPs for each instrument and ensure adherence to safety and data integrity standards. **Research Support and Communications** + Assists with the preparation of grant proposals, equipment justifications, and research documentation related to instrumentation and facility capabilities. + Organizes interdisciplinary research planning meetings, training workshops, and internal seminars. + Maintains project data archives and assists researchers in producing high-quality reports, publications, and presentations. + Communicates laboratory capabilities to external users and support the development of service agreements. **Training and Outreach** + Trains students, researchers, and external users on the use of ALCIS instrumentation, sample preparation workflows, and data handling protocols. + Serves as a technical guide for troubleshooting and optimizing instrument methods. + Assists with outreach activities such as tours, demonstrations, and educational programming. + Maintains and updates laboratory web content, training materials, and promotional literature. The incumbent will perform other related duties as assigned. **QUALIFICATIONS** Bachelor's Degree required. **A preferred candidate should have:** + Master degree in geochemistry, earth/atmospheric science, or chemistry. + Prior experience in a core facility or research-intensive environment. + Working knowledge of the instrumentation used in the lab, be fluent in relevant technical terminology, and demonstrate the ability to independently identify, diagnose, and resolve common operational issues. + Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical users. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. + Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with faculty, staff and students. + Excellent customer service and organizational skills **Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Sponsorship will not be offered for this position.** **CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW** Assists with the administration of College research programs and coordinates research facilities. - Works with faculty and others to prepare, set-up, and monitor budgets for research project expenditures, including new faculty start-ups and funds for facilities - Collects information for, and prepares fiscal and program reports on research projects - May assist with preparing grant proposals and providing information to funding sources. - Assists with space planning for research efforts - Works with Environmental Health and Safety personnel on planning, monitoring, and compliance - Maintains databases and other systems that collect information regarding College research activities - Schedules, coordinates and prepares materials for meetings. - Coordinates with other offices to prepare agendas and reports. Salary range will increase to $77,269-$89,506/year as of 9/1/25 per the new contract. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
