No County Albany Street Address Division of Infectious Diseases / Rabies Laboratory Griffin Laboratory, 5668 State Farm Road City Slingerlands State NY Zip Code 12159 Duties Description The Research Scientist 1 major activities are necropsy, performing the direct fluorescent antibody test (dFAT), reporting results to the submitting county, and data management. The candidate will prepare and process samples for molecular (PCR) testing in a diagnostic and research capacity. The Research Scientist 1 will also use PCR and sequencing technologies for clinically relevant and emerging zoonotic agents. Candidate will calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment. Other duties as required. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in the natural sciences and two years of post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field, or a Master's degree in the appropriate field and one year of post-degree professional research experience in that field.Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have professional work experience in clinical laboratory testing, biology, microbiology, veterinary medicine, wildlife biology, public health or infectious diseases. Additional experience or licensure as a veterinary technician or laboratory animal caretaker is ideal. Experience in necropsy, fluorescent microscopy, data management, and expertise in molecular techniques including clinical and research assay development. Bachelor’s degree in biological or chemical sciences and a minimum of two years’ experience in the handling of infectious clinical samples and/or human pathogens at biosafety level 2 containment. Excellent written and communication skills and proficiency using Microsoft Office programs including Access, Excel and Word. Since exposure to potentially hazardous substances maybe involved with this position, the selected candidate will be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment, and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations.
