We seek a research scientist and manager to lead the group of research faculty aligned with the Human and Social Systems Core Capability of the UMD ARLIS UARC The Core Capability Lead is responsible for working collaboratively with the Mission Area Coordinators and project Principal Investigators to ensure that staffing needs are met on research contracts The CCL will participate in the deliverable quality review process for these contracts As a senior role in the organization CCLs lead collaborations and communications with UMD campus faculty and participate in UMD ARLIS committees and opportunities for service to the University As a PTK Faculty member the CCL will participate inlead research efforts in their own discipline and will be funded 5050 on management and direct project funds Reporting to the Director of Research the CCL recruits manages mentors and develops a world class team of faculty researchers who apply qualitative and quantitative approaches to research challenges in areas such as linguistics psychology sociology cognitive science political science economics international relations criminology anthropology and second language acquisition Key Responsibilities The key responsibility of the Human and Social Sciences CCL is to support strategic and long range planning for the HSS group The HSS Core Capability Lead recruits manages mentors and develops a world class team of faculty researchers who apply qualitative and quantitative approaches to research challenges in areas such as linguistics psychology sociology cognitive science political science economics international relations criminology anthropology and second language acquisition This planning requires performing portfolio analysis and assessment for the areas of science represented by the core competency The lead will manage the ongoing operational and professional development needs of the groups professional track faculty and establish goals and objectives for its progression The HSS Core Capability Lead will be expected to advise and assist in the development of short and long range plans in collaboration with other Core Leads Mission Area Leads and the broader ARLIS leadership team This role also requires serving as an individual contributor and technical leader on research programs in the core competency area The Core Capability Lead will report to the Director of Research Additional Responsibilities Develop and assess the mission vision strategic and operational plans of the HHS Core Capability group at ARLIS including the development of a strategic staffing plan hiring goals and vision for ARLISs unique and essential technical approaches to intelligence and security challenges In support of and in coordination with Mission Area leads develop ideas concepts and white papers for new projects cultivate relationships with key government research sponsors and promote role appropriate business development activities among HSS personnel Actively contribute to ARLISs and UMDs comprehensive research strategy as a representative of an ARLIS core capability group Supervise and mentor entry growing and career level researchers Conceive of develop lead andor contribute to sponsored research projects Manage group administrative activities including hiring overseeing and conducting performance appraisals and ensuring project talent resources are met Provide support encouragement and ongoing reinforcement of continuous learning and improvement and idea exchanges to build strong operations and technical excellence within the core capability group Create a focused working environment for professional track faculty through a controlled inflow and balance of project work Maintain strategic partnerships with researchers staff ARLIS leadership sponsors and faculty across campus
