JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Research Projects
Plans, organizes, directs, and participates in experiments on cancer research projects. Adheres to all institutional guidelines for correct practice of laboratory safety and universal precautions standards. Carries out specific projects of developing recombinant therapeutic antibodies with multi-functions. Masters basic skills of antibody engineering techniques. Designs primers and makes various constructs of recombinant antibody expression cassettes. Expresses antibody constructs in mammalian cells. Performs functional characterization of the recombinant antibodies generated. Develops various animal models suitable for assessing the activity of recombinant antibodies in vivo. Performs animal experiments to evaluate the therapeutic effects of recombinant antibodies generated. Designs research projects semi-independently and physically carries out research projects approved by the principal investigator. Knowledgeable with the science and rationale of assigned projects. Familiar with current literature related to projects. Cell culture studies (analysis of cell cycle progression, proliferation, differentiation or death using assays such as Coulter counting, MTT, FACS, TUNEL, ELISA, etc.), protein analysis (Western blot analysis, immunoprecipitation, etc.), molecular biology skills (extraction of RNA, PCR cloning and nucleotide point mutagenesis, etc.), and animal manipulation and experimental skills, including tumor cells implantation, intraperitoneal injections, tail vein injections, measurement and observation of tumor growth and development in mice, sacrifice of mice and collections of tumor specimens, animal imaging using the equipment in small animal imaging facility. Organizes, plans and implements experiments under the direction of a professional staff member. Functions in an independent manner in the design and initiation of research experiments.
Equipment and Supply Management
Selects and purchases new equipment in consultation with other professional staff, and maintains technical equipment for the laboratory. Manages inventory of biologics and replenishes as needed. Orders materials for research studies as needed.
Data & Laboratory Safety
Compiles, writes and evaluates data for publication purposes and submits weekly project results to PI in appropriate digital format. Maintains accurate, detailed, and well-organized experimental records, data and protocols. Prepares graphs and tables via photography, computer or manually, and communicates results to principal investigator. Presents findings of research projects to professional groups and prepares scientific documents for patent applications and publications. Assists PI to ensure correct practice of laboratory safety and universal precautions standards as required under institutional guidelines, including but not limited to: maintenance of institutional regulatory records (safety manuals, MSDS, etc.) and performance of required laboratory testing (radiation wipe tests, etc.). Keeps updated on training classes required by the institution and passes annual examinations. Maintains knowledge of all safety requirements. Coordinates and shares responsibilities of laboratory maintenance and operation issues with co-workers.
Education: PhD in one of the natural sciences or related field or Medical degree.
Experience: With PhD, no experience required. With Medical degree, two years of experience in experimental or scientific work.
Preferred Experience: Five years of related experience to include research work at MDACC.
