The Weimer Lab's/ETSF's interdisciplinary approach combines cell and molecular biology, genetics, and behavioral neuroscience to investigate how mechanisms of disrupted cortical development and neurodegeneration contribute to human disease and their potential as targets for drug intervention. In addition to exploring basic biology, the Weimer Lab also focuses on the development and screening of therapies for rare metabolic and neurodegenerative disorders such as Batten disease, cortical malformations, neurofibromatosis type I, and related lysosomal storage disorders such as Pompe and Fabry disease. Utilizing small and large animal models of disease, the Weimer Lab collaborates with industry and other academic institutions to explore various therapeutic approaches, including gene delivery, enzyme replacement therapy, and small molecule drug compounds. Additionally, they study the functional role of specific proteins and metabolic pathways in disease progression both to aid in the development of targeted therapies, and to identify disease-specific biomarkers.
