Research Specialist
The Department of Genetic Medicine is seeking a **_Research Specialist_** to provide research/lab work in all areas to the production genomics laboratories. **Specific Duties and Responsibilities** + Barcode and enter sample associated information into the database. + Transfer DNA samples into 96-well plate format. + Receive and prepare deepwell DNA stock plates and create working DNA plates. + Determine concentration and volume of DNA samples using various instruments. + Dilute samples to working concentrations. + Maintain and monitor inventory of all in-house DNA samples and reagent supplies. + Receive and dispense incoming packages and samples. + Create master mixes; Set up polymerase chain reactions; trouble-shoot such reactions. + Operate and troubleshoot robotic liquid handlers. + Prepare and complete SNP genotyping assays including, but not limited to, Illumina assays and workflows. + Prepare samples for targeted capture of specific regions of DNA for sequencing experiments. This includes library preparation and capture techniques. + Prepare and complete Next-Gen sequencing assays including, but not limited to, Illumina NovaSeq series workflows. + Participate in transition of new assays from RnD to production. + Participate in protocol development. Assists in development of new techniques and instruments. + Update protocols in HPO as new technologies and modifications are implemented. + Perform quality control checks of data using various software, including, but not limited to, GenomeStudio, Spotfire and other in-house QC metrics reports. + Serve as a resource to new technicians; Facilitate problem solving for entry-level lab members on day-to-day problems. + Use scientific knowledge and lab experience to evaluate whether component parts of experiments are working as they should. + Competence in protocols in multiple lab group. + Maintain timely and accurate laboratory records (electronic and written). + Collect, organize, interpret and submit experimental data to database and supervisors. + Perform general lab maintenance duties. + Perform validation tests of lab reagents. + Participate in committees that function to improve processes. + Communicate effectively to supervisor and team members. + Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned. **Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities** + Basic understanding of molecular biology and genetics. + Ability to safely operate scientific laboratory equipment. + Able to work flexible hours beginning as early as 6:00 a.m. and/or ending as late as 6:00 p.m. + Superior organizational skills for time and data management. + Ability to function well in a team production setting. _Machines/equipment used_ + Centrifuges, Illumina BeadLab system (Tecans, iScans, TeFlow), Covaris, BioAnalyzer, LabChip GX Touch, Qubit, Nanodrop instruments, TapeStation, Illumina NovaSeq series, MiSeq and iSeq, thermal cyclers, robotic and manual liquid handlers, common laboratory equipment, Macintosh, PC computers, UNIX servers, Oracle database. **Minimum Qualifications** + Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field. + One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques. + Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. **Preferred Qualifications** + Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time. + Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. + Finger dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm, for example, using a keyboard. + Communication skills using the spoken word and ability to see and hear within normal parameters. + Ability to move about workspace and lift, carry, move supplies, computers, etc Classified Title: Research Specialist Role/Level/Range: ACRP/03/MA Starting Salary Range: $17.11 - $29.90 HRLY ($48,900 targeted; Commensurate w/exp.)
