Job Summary:

The Research Technician 1, Animal Resource Centre (ARC) reports to the Operations Manager, performs routine daily care of laboratory mice and maintains an organized, clean, and tidy work area, in accordance with Containment Level 2 Barrier animal facility function. The role supports ARC Management, Support, Coordinators, Research Technicians, and Users and maintains laboratory records using programs similar to Mosaic and Vivarium Management software to ensure efficient and timely animal care and service.  

The Research Technician 1 performs duties in a sterile research laboratory environment and draws from animal research environment and/or animal care experience. The role maintains and adheres to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and governing body policies and guidelines set forth by the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC), UBC Animal Care and Use Program (UBC ACUP), BC Cancer Research Institute Safety, and Standards Council of Canada (SCC), and ARC SOPs.

Duties/Accountabilities:

1.    Conducts daily mice health checks assessment and changes cages as per scheduled rotation.
2.    Maintains records, identifies and records clinical signs using appropriate SOPs and guidelines.
3.    Performs assessments and ensuring accurate reporting as per applicable SOPs and/or governing policies.
4.    Under close supervision and in adherence with applicable SOPs, performs basic first aid for mice.
5.    Operates equipment as it relates to animal health including feeding, cleaning and maintenance as per SOPs. Performs general housekeeping and maintenance of laboratory area and equipment.
6.    Under the supervision of senior Research Technicians, assists with technical, husbandry and/or colony management under supervision, service, scheduled by manager and designates.
7.    Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience

•    Grade 12, completion of animal biology courses plus one year’s recent related experience, or grade 12 plus two year’s recent related laboratory experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
