GDIT is seeking a Senior Technician to support a project for Metagenomic Detection of Militarily Relevant Infectious Diseases in Environmental Samples and Arthropod Vectors. This work is in support of the Walter Reed Army institute of Research (WRAIR) Entomology Branch’s, Walter Reed Biosystematic Unit (WRBU).Responsibilities:Develop, validate and implement Illumina/ NGS sequencing of multiple sample types (environmental, vertebrate and invertebrate) for the detection of pathogens. This may include development of primers for isothermal and melting curve assays and qPCR and the development of primers and probes for real-time PCR assays.Develop pathogen identification assays both molecular and non- molecular platforms.Develop standard operating procedures to formalize testing procedures using these assays so that multiple testing entities may produce comparable data suitable for use in surveillance programs.Provide vector identification support services, including identification services and training, for DoD costumers and research collaborators upon request.Provide at least two peer reviewed scientific publication/year as first or senior author and participate in internal seminars presenting results of current studies at least twice/year.Participate in scientific interactions and/or collaborations with other WRAIR Branch members and other labs within the U.S. Military Entomology Research Program.Initiate and maintain collaborative relationships with external partners, including various international and non-governmental organizations to coordinate RDT&E efforts toward understanding and reducing the risk of vector-borne and other environmental diseases.Assist in the planning, organization, and conduct of research and development of new SOPs, assay and implementing techniques as required.Write research grant proposals, and under the Research Director’s review and approval, submit for funding support, conduct research studies under supervision of the Research Director.Provide technical advice on the Unit operations and participate in resolution of all problems.Acquire and maintain training/certifications required for the position, duties, and responsibilities. May require working evenings and weekends.Maintain a safe workplace ensuring appropriate safety and occupational health rules and regulations are observed.Attend all safety training relative to the position and report any infractions to the facility Safety Officer.Qualifications: B.S. in entomology or life sciences filed. M.S. highly preferred.Exhibit and maintain effective technical knowledge, skills and abilities in the following areas: molecular biology, vector biology, bioinformatics, molecular genetics, and vector-borne diseases of military and global health importance.Expertise in the detection and characterization of novel, emerging and emergent pathogens.#GDITFedHealth#FedHealth#MilitaryHealthThe likely salary range for this position is $52,270 - $66,700. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary.
