The Department of Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology (MGCB) is an innovative interdisciplinary community of scientists committed to investigating molecular aspects of biological phenomena that operate on a cellular scale. This at-will position is wholly or partially funded by contractual grant funding which is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these grant funds and satisfactory job performance.


Job Summary

The Research Technician will assist with ongoing and emerging projects in a basic and translational cancer research laboratory by performing cell culture, immunoassays, biochemical assays, microscopy, and other standard approaches in cancer research. The Research Technician will also have responsibility for studies of experimental tumors in mice, involving activities such as implanting tumors, injecting mice with therapy, monitoring response and sacrificing mice to examine tumors and normal tissue. Research will focus on working to understand and improve conventional, targeted, immune and nanomedicine therapies for solid tumors and blood cancers. Candidate will perform experiments and conduct data analysis according to established protocols with minimal supervision and compile results into reports and presentations. Some assistance with routine maintenance of laboratory databases, inventory and equipment is also required.

Responsibilities

Will have responsibility for handling and treatment of small animals, including performing irradiations, injections/inoculations, and blood/tissue collection.

Will provide regular oral reports on progress to the principal investigator.

Provides technical and administrative support for a research project.

Collects and enters data. Assists in analyzing data. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.

Assists with the installation, sets up and performs experiments; interacting with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator.

May assist recruiting and scheduling research subjects; assisting with developing or amending study protocols; assisting with developing data collection tools; assisting with building databases; and providing general administrative support. Is developing skills in research techniques or methods, regulatory policies and procedures, and relevant scientific field.

Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

Bachelors and/or Masters degree in a field relevant to the research being conducted.

Experience:

Prior experience with cell biology, biochemical and molecular biology methods.

Experience with mice and/or other small vertebrates as research models.

Knowledge of standard research techniques relevant to cancer and immunology research.

Familiarity with standard laboratory equipment and common data analysis software.

Working Conditions

Lab Environment.

Moderate physical activity which includes reaching for materials, carrying materials, safe handling and manipulation of chemicals and biological materials according to approved protocols, writing, computer use, standing at the bench, and bending at the waist/crouching to access certain pieces of equipment.

Requires the ability to stand for long periods of time, very good manual dexterity and the ability to perform fine motor tasks.

Weekend/Evening hours are occasionally needed.
