Research Technician II

A full-time Research Tech II position is available at the University of Pittsburgh, Ophthalmology Department in Dr. Liyun Zhang’s laboratory. The lab focuses on uncovering the mechanisms of retinal neuron degeneration and regeneration, with the ultimate goal of developing novel therapies for retinal degenerative disorders. Using CRISPR/Cas9 technology, the lab generates human retinal disease models in zebrafish to study key signaling pathways involved in disease progression and conduct in vivo phenotypic drug screening to identify potential therapeutic agents.

Requirements:

1 A Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Molecular Biology or related scientific field is required.

2 Previous research experience is preferred but not mandatory, especially with the following techniques and skills:

a. Zebrafish husbandry (e.g. general care, breeding, genotyping, phenotyping, drug treatments).

b. High resolution imaging (e.g. fluorescence and confocal microscopy).

c. Histological and immunological tissue processing.

d. Standard molecular biology techniques (e.g. PCR, cloning, RNA/DNA extraction)

3 Strong attention to details and excellent organizational skills.

4 Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a diverse research team.

5 Enthusiasm for science and a proactive mindset to learn new techniques and contribute to innovative research.

Performs a variety of laboratory experiments and procedures. Prepares specimens. Oversees supply management. Operates and properly maintains equipment.

The Research Technician will play a critical role in supporting the lab’s scientific endeavors by conducting experiments, maintaining laboratory organization, and ensuring the zebrafish facility operates smoothly. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

1) Perform a variety of experiments, such as drug screening, histology, confocal imaging, zebrafish behavior assays, and generating transgenic models. Assist in data analysis and troubleshoot experimental challenges.

2) Maintain zebrafish stocks, monitor fish health, and organize zebrafish databases.

3) Maintain detailed, accurate and timely records of experimental data in organized logbooks. Document and analyze results to contribute to lab meetings and discussions.

4) Sterilize experimental materials, prepare solutions, maintain a clean and safe working environment.

5) Oversee supply management, including ordering, tracking and receiving materials and reagents.
