Research Technician II
Seattle Children's
The DiBlasi Lab aims to develop and evaluate inhaled therapies and life-support systems for newborns and children with life-threatening respiratory failure. Working with worldwide collaborators, industry partners and clinical staff at Seattle Children's Hospital (SCH), the lab conducts innovative pre-clinical research to investigate respiratory therapies and devices' therapeutic benefits and responses to promote gas exchange, lung health, growth, and development. The lab focuses on novel drug delivery formulations and devices for administering inhaled medical aerosols and specialty gases, improving airway secretion clearance, and optimizing mechanical ventilation. Laboratory findings have been translated into clinical trials and resulted in several devices and therapies that are currently being used clinically in children. Ultimately, the lab aims to improve Respiratory Care for children in all low and well-resourced clinical settings.
The DiBlasi Lab works with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and industry partners to study and develop aerosolized surfactants. In an effort to bridge a major gap in lung protection and infant mortality from surfactant deficiency and respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), producing a surfactant aerosol and delivery system would prevent or delay disease progression, dramatically reduce airway and pulmonary injury, extend the functional capabilities of nasal noninvasive support (i.e., CPAP) and avoid intubation in a large fraction of infants that would otherwise receive invasive mechanical ventilation. The lab is equipped to measure aerosol delivery efficiency and safety during in vitro experiments to estimate pulmonary medication delivery using realistic high-fidelity breathing simulators and 3D-printed anatomic upper airways. Gamma scintigraphy is used to quantify radioaerosol deposition in the upper airways and lungs and inadvertent medication losses within the CPAP delivery hoses and interfaces. In vivo, drug efficacy studies apply surfactant aerosols in surfactant-deficient lungs to evaluate dose-response effects on gas exchange, lung mechanics, lung injury/inflammation, and other physiologic outcomes.
We are looking to build upon our comprehensive research and team by hiring a Research Technician II who will be involved with daily lab activities and in vitro and in vivo experiments. This position will include 40 hrs/week, 10 hr/day- Tuesday through Friday.
