Job Description

The Renewable Resources and Enabling Science Center at NREL has an opening for a full-time research technologist position to support research and development activities related to the development of non-model bacterial biocatalysts for conversion of CO2- and biomass-derived substrates to fuels, chemicals, and materials. The successful candidate will support a small team of researchers and work on multiple projects using their experience in molecular biology and microbiology methods.

Responsibilities will include performing strain construction and evaluation.

Basic QualificationsLevel 1

Relevant Bachelor's Degree. Limited use and application of engineering principles, theories and concepts. Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.

Level 2

Relevant Master's Degree . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 1 or more years of experience . General knowledge and application of scientific technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques. Training in team, task or project leadership responsibilities. Intermediate abilities and knowledge of practices and techniques. Beginning experience in project management. Good technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Required Qualifications

BS in Biological Engineering, Molecular Biology, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field.

Working knowledge of bacterial geneticsExperience with plasmid constructionExperience with Microbial genome engineering and microbial cultivation and sterile technique.Strong communication and organizational skills, including clear and thorough record keepingAbility to maintain a clean lab space with utmost attention to safetyAble to work independently and as part of a teamDemonstrates troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with good attention to detailStrong written, verbal, team, interpersonal, and communication skills.Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPointDemonstrated experience in a microbiology laboratory

Level II (Additional)

Ability to take an immediate role in making methodological or procedural improvements.Advanced skills in research techniques and practices.

Preferred QualificationsFamiliarity with bacterial metabolism, and physiologyExperience with next-generation DNA sequencing analysisAcquaintance with analytical chemistryExperience with bioreactor cultivation or bioprocess developmentAbility to thrive in a dynamic role with greatly varying daily expectations in a team atmosphereProven ability to learn new skills in parallel with continually supporting ongoing work

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)Job Profile: Research Technologist II / Annual Salary Range: $65,100 - $107,400

Job Profile: Research Technologist I / Annual Salary Range: $56,800 - $93,700
