Position Summary
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES – RESPONSIBILITIES
-Assists in coordinating water science research and laboratory and/or field operations in order to meet research goals.
-Performs experimental tests and assays and records and analyzes results in order to provide conclusive data for research projects.
-Consults with research supervisor in order to assist in planning and designing experiments and laboratory logistics.
-Maintains field and laboratory research data repositories, and does quality assurance on collected data
-Compiles and summarizes results and participates in preparing figures, reports, manuscripts and articles for publication.
-Acts as a resource person to internal and external individuals regarding research projects and experiments.
-Performs all field work and experiments in order to support research goals.
-Oversees the compliance to laboratory safety regulations and procedures.
-Reviews the work of research technicians and student employees.
-Oversees laboratory/field needs and orders materials, supplies and equipment.
-Operates, calibrates and maintains laboratory/field water chemistry instruments and equipment in order to ensure proper functioning, accuracy and compliance with written specifications.
-Research literature in order to maintain a current knowledge of laboratory research methods and terminology.
-Prepares internal procedures documents describing lab, field, and instrument protocols
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge normally acquired by completing a four-year college degree program water sciences, environmental science, engineering or other related field; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard Earth and Environmental laboratory procedures, field work, and safety requirements and performing basic research techniques in an area related to research being performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Qualifications
Requires valid vehicle operator's license where needed to perform duties of the position. Ability to conduct outdoor work in remote/rural locations in occasionally mildly disagreeable weather conditions. This position requires or will require prior to the completion of the probationary period: knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations, and the ability to use e-mail and the Internet.
Desired Qualifications
One to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard Earth and Environmental laboratory procedures, field work, and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in an area related to research being performed; may require software specific to the area of research.
The position may require special licensing or certification in the field related to the area of employment.
