Overview:
The Pre-First Year Program (PFP) is an academically rigorous and intensive four-week summer program preceding New Student Orientation (NSO). Program participants receive comprehensive support services that begin with PFP and continue throughout the students’ undergraduate experience at Penn. PFP is a chance for participating students to get an academic and social edge, while quickly becoming familiar with campus resources and the Penn community. The program, while academic in nature, encourages students to form lasting bonds of friendships through regular social and cultural activities.
The Residence Director (RD) reports to the program Director and is essential in ensuring the Pre-First Year Program (PFP) runs smoothly and effectively by fostering a sense of community and belonging and creating a positive living-learning environment where program participants can thrive. Additionally, RDs are responsible for overseeing the daily activities of PFP and providing direct supervision to peer mentors.
Duties and Required Skills:
+ Oversee daily PFP activities, ensuring program participants adhere to program rules and policies
+ Serve as the “RD on Duty” for a 24-hour period, except on scheduled days off
+ Respond to and manage crisis or emergency situations as they arise
+ Maintain a peaceful and respectful residential environment by addressing issues using conflict resolution and restorative justice practices
+ Provide direct supervision to peer mentors, offering coaching and guidance as needed
+ Plan and organize activities that enhance team performance and boost morale among peer mentors
+ Lead and facilitate PFP-related sessions during Peer Mentor training
+ Support the development of a strong community during Peer Mentor training and throughout the program
+ Oversee weekly student-lead programming and workshops, including weekend activities
+ Attend daily staff meetings with the Program Director
+ Lead daily staff meetings with Peer Mentors
+ Facilitate weekly check-ins with PennCAP Counselors to provide comprehensive academic and social support for students
+ Assist in creating program flyers, planning and promoting community engagement events, and collaborate with Associate Director of Community and Resource Engagement to manage PFP social media platforms
+ Collaborate closely with PFP, PennCAP, and P1P staff to support program objectives
+ Complete administrative tasks assigned, contributing to the strategic goals of PFP, PennCAP, and P1P
Qualifications:
+ Graduate students with experience in Housing and Residence Life preferred
+ Knowledge of campus resources that support first-year students
+ Experience working with high school and college-aged populations
+ Ability to enforce program rules and policies when necessary
+ Strong leadership, supervisory, organizational, and administrative skills
+ Detail –oriented with a solution focused approach
+ Excellent communication and customer service skills
+ Multicultural competency, understanding of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB), along with an awareness of intersecting identities
+ Strong self-awareness and professionalism
+ Familiarity with online platforms such as Canvas, Canva, Teams, Microsoft Office, newsletters and Social Media
+ Previous experience as an administrator or teacher in a high school setting is strongly preferred
+ Availability to work evenings, weekends, and be on-call throughout the duration of the program
Interviews will begin immediately and continue, on a rolling basis, until the position is filled. This is a Temporary Non-Exempt Co-op position intended for Non-Penn Student Workers
The hourly rate for this position is $25/hr at 40 hrs/week, plus a free private apartment and weekday meals. This position is full-time with around-the-clock responsibilities during the student residential component.
