Job Summary The Basic Needs Center is seeking a Resource Literacy Coordinator. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, professional faculty position. The Basic Needs Center ( BNC ) at Oregon State University is a vibrant community where students support each other in meeting basic needs. Student Peer Navigators offer coaching, problem-solving, resource navigation, and community- building to classmates working within economic challenges. The BNC hosts conversations, events, outreach, and programs focused on housing, food, and living strategies, including benefits application support, cooking classes, a learning garden, Emergency Housing Program, laptop loans, laundry, OSU Food Pantry, textbook lending, and free showers. The center is lively with activities, warm conversations, music, natural light, and a cozy fireplace. The BNC values relationships and trust, fostering leadership and capacity-building in all team members. Everyone is both a learner and a teacher at various moments within the program, working and learning within an organization that values and practices both high support and high expectations. The Resource Literacy Coordinator supports OSU students through leadership development, program administration, and education. This role mentors student leaders, fosters an ethos of resourcefulness community-wide, and encourages strategic thinking and problem-solving. This role will facilitate programming and services that help students develop sustainable strategies for “living with less” and empowers them to tackle challenges with practical approaches. The position promotes resource awareness and self-efficacy, offering coaching and guidance in resource literacy to the BNC community and team. This role facilitates (often student-led) training sessions, workshops, and educational opportunities to enhance community resource literacy as well. The coordinator develops and evaluates team training, monitors community resources, and ensures effective information sharing. This role will lead and coordinate key programs and services like the BNC Textbook Lending Program and Laptop Loan Program and will co-lead SNAP education and outreach. Why OSU? Key Responsibilities 40% Supervision & Student Leadership Development + Foster an inclusive and relationship-rich environment where student staff are challenged and supported toward their goals. Collaborate within a shared supervision model with the Community Programs Coordinator, Food Security Programs Manager, Outreach Programs Coordinator, and Peer-Aid Coordinator on mentoring, coaching, evaluating, and performance improvement. + Hold 1×1 meetings with peer navigators, complete evaluations, recommend merit raises, and participate in coaching/progressive discipline. + Co-create, monitor, and assess Academic Improvement Plans for student staff. + Host team meetings for student leaders. + Provide everyday coaching and mentoring to peer navigators around basic needs, affordability strategies, resource literacy, course materials, and technology access. + Support peer-to-peer conversations in real time, fielding questions as needed and supporting learning. + Student project management is a meaningful part of this position. Vet and meter student projects to steward within program boundaries, support project management skills including timeline and budget creation, receive progress reports, and support plans as projects unfold. + Supervise work related to the BNC Textbook Lending Program, Laptop Loan Program, and outreach for the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program ( SNAP ) and Oregon Health Plan ( OHP ). + Hire, supervise, mentor, and evaluate students serving their OSU Human Services and Family Sciences ( HDFS ) internship at the BNC . 30% Program Coordination + Collaborate with Peer Navigators in the development of BNC community-facing workshops and efficacy-building activities that build student awareness of basic needs resources and promote strategy development for improving basic needs security. Oversee annual programing. + Develop and strive to meet learning outcomes for programs. Utilize feedback and assessment to enhance programs over time. + Coordinate the BNC Textbook Lending Program – purchases, inventory, workflows, etc. Steward the BNC’s relationship with the OSU Valley Library. Prepare for program shifts or wind-downs as the campus course materials landscape changes. + Coordinate the Laptop Loan Program and steward the BNC’s relationship with the OSU Media Hub, which co-leads the program. + Collaborate closely with the Food Security Programs Manager and Outreach Programs Coordinator to coordinate, evaluate, and improve student participation in SNAP and OHP benefits programs. Includes supporting peer support interactions, workshops, sign-up efforts, and other educational efforts. + Cultivate and maintain relationships with key campus and community organizations. + Maintain appropriate awareness of basic needs resource policy changes, eligibility adjustments, or other updates. + Compile and report monthly program data for HB2835 state grant reporting requirements. + Coach, approve, and purchase program and activity supplies. + Lead or support recruitment and hiring processes. + Ensure compliance with university policies. + Manage relevant email communications. + Participate in departmental meetings for professional staff and management team. 25% Education and Training + Serve as a subject matter expert in resource literacy, textbook resources, laptop resources, SNAP , and OHP . Cultivate an ethos of resourcefulness and sharing throughout the BNC community via workshops, educational activities, and communications. + Develop, implement, and assess training for student and professional staff centered on basic needs strategy knowledge, resource literacy, affordability strategies, SNAP , OHP , communication, and project management. + Develop and lead training for the Textbook Lending Program, including for Alma, the online library management system. + Collaborate with student leaders and professional staff to improve peer-to-peer conversation tools. + Plan broader training and leadership development experiences for student staff, frequently in collaboration with internal and external university staff. Connect training goals to relevant theories and literature (examples: Asset- Based Community Development, Problem-Based Learning, Adaptive Leadership Development, Mutual Aid, and Peer Support best practices). + Provide expertise and support to internal and external stakeholders about the BNC programming model. 5% Other duties as assigned + Collaborate on program-wide development, including staff training, strategic planning, and assessment efforts. + Provide cross-coverage of center supervision/programs for other management roles, particularly the Peer Aid Coordinator. + Participate in relevant program and division meetings. + Other duties as assigned What You Will Need + Bachelor’s degree in education, anthropology, business, sustainability, environmental studies, speech communication, or other degree relevant to the position. + Demonstrated 2+ years of full-time experience supervising, mentoring, or advising staff teams or volunteer groups. + Excellent organizational skills and demonstrable success executing complex projects. + Experience successfully collaborating in a team environment with diverse individuals. + Experience working in mixed-class or working-class environments. + Strong front-of-the-room teaching and facilitation abilities + Strong written and oral communication skills. + Demonstrated success coaching or building efficacy and leadership in others. + Excellent situational judgement and use of professional interpersonal boundaries. This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months. What We Would Like You to Have + Professionally applicable graduate studies (degrees or certificates) in relevant topics including (but not limited to) student development, professional coaching, motivational interviewing, organizational development, business leadership or leadership development. + Personal experience participating or working in a youth or student leadership development program with the ability to communicate the value of such to others. + Experience managing conditions of scarce resources (limited food, housing, and/or economic resources) and/or navigating and using basic needs resources. + Experience conducting program assessment or other intentional approaches to continuous quality improvement. + Valid driver’s license and ability to drive or willingness to learn to drive university vehicle. Working Conditions / Work Schedule Our center is regularly busy and can be noisy. Remote work in this function will be rare and only as needed with prior approval. Work schedule will be 8-5 or 9-6 pm weekdays. Heavy lifting (occasionally up to 50 lbs) will be required with some regularity. Evening and weekend work is rare and coordinated with significant advance notice.
