Job Summary

Initiate, direct and complete power generation resource planning activities including the preparation of inputs to, and the analysis of outputs from, detailed production cost and resource optimization models and associated analyses for existing and new generation resources, energy efficiency alternatives, fuel and purchased power projections used in Integrated Resource Planning filings, corporate budgeting & strategy discussions, fuel factor filings, and other regulatory filings. Contribute resource planning related content to the development of Integrated Resource Plans. Evaluate power supply alternatives and present findings to higher levels of management. Design and perform other modeling related studies and analyses. Prepare testimony and serve as a Company witness in regulatory proceedings. This position will work independently, will receive minimal guidance and will act as a resource for colleagues with less experience.

Job Description

Based on education, experience and interview, this opportunity will be filled commensurately at either title in the Resource Planning Analyst job family. For this posting, minimum requirements are written at the lower grade. Increased expectations are at the higher grade.

Resource Planning Analyst Principal (grade 8)

Resource Planning Analyst Sr. (grade 7) = bachelor's degree + six to eight (6-8) years of experience; OR, master's degree + four (4) years of experience; OR, three (3) years as a Resource Planning Analyst.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

- Develop testimony and serve as a witness, as assigned, for regulatory proceedings.

- Initiate and direct various generation resource planning studies and analyses.

- Complete power generation resource optimization and production cost modeling simulation studies for budgeting, regulatory and other purposes.

- Maintain a working knowledge of modeling resources and techniques to be used in completing resource planning analyses and to implement process improvements.

- Maintain a working knowledge of Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) rules, policies and procedures to ensure modeling efforts incorporate and reflect those requirements.

- Maintain a working knowledge of various generation supply and demand side alternatives to be utilized in resource planning analyses, including impacts from energy efficiency, demand response and intermittent resources on production costing and resource planning analyses.

- Develop, prepare and approve reports and analyses in support regulatory reporting requirements, including Integrated Resource Plans and interrogatory responses.

- Collaborate with Resource Planning key stakeholders, including state regulatory staff personnel, to address Integrated Resource Planning issues or concerns.

- Formulate and communicate Operating Company capacity/load/reserve (CDR) schedules and collaborate with key data providers to improve the CDR process and maintain the database used as input to the CDR.

- Develop procedures and nonstandard reports using the outputs of such models to meet specific company needs.

- Develop professional working relationships with Operating Company staffs and AEPSC departments that are interacted with on a regular basis including Regulatory Services, Commercial Operations; Fuel, Emissions & Logistics; Engineering; Financial Forecasting; Finance; Environmental Services; and Strategic Policy Analysis.

- Develop working relationship with software technical support personnel to resolve modeling issues and make recommendations to enhance modeling performance.

- Research and manage industry issues/developments that may impact resource planning or production costing studies and analyses.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR ANALYST SR:

Education:

Bachelor's degree in an analytical field such as engineering, mathematics, computer science, or business (e.g. accounting, finance, economics), or a Bachelor's degree in a non-analytical field with two years of analytical experience.

Experience:

Three years as a Resource Planning Analyst or six years of related resource planning experience (in addition to the experience identified above), specifically in generating plant operations or construction, renewable energy, energy efficiency, commercial operations, RTO operations, or transmission engineering/operations. An advanced degree in an analytical field such as engineering, mathematics, computer science, or business (e.g. accounting, finance, economics) will be considered to be 2 years of relevant work experience.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR ANALYST PRINCIPAL:

Education:

Bachelor's degree in an analytical field such as engineering, mathematics, computer science, or business (e.g. accounting, finance, economics), or a Bachelor's degree in a non-analytical field with two years of analytical experience.

Experience:

Three years as a Resource Planning Analyst Sr or nine years of related resource planning experience (in addition to the experience identified above), specifically in generating plant operations or construction, renewable energy, energy efficiency, commercial operations, RTO operations, or transmission engineering/operations. An advanced degree in an analytical field such as engineering, mathematics, computer science, or business (e.g. accounting, finance, economics) will be considered to be 2 years of relevant experience.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

- Ability to work occasional overtime (weekend/evenings) and/or work remotely.

- Occasional overnight travel may be required.

- Ability to serve as a witness in regulatory proceedings (may require travel for multiple days).

- This position is extremely data and modeling intensive.

- Proficient in Microsoft Office product suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), familiarity with Access and SAS also preferred.

- Master’s degree preferred.

- Candidates with a professional certification or license will be given preference (e.g., PE, CPA, CMA, CFA)

INITIAL POSITION / BASE SALARY FUNDING: approximately ($86,000 - $124,000) across these salary grades/titles. In addition to base salary, AEP offers competitive Total Rewards including: discretionary annual incentive, 401(k), pension, health insurance, vacation, educational assistance, etc.
