Respiratory Care Assistant - Respiratory Therapy - Days

Position Function: Under the supervision of the Manager of Respiratory Care Services, performs clerical, supportive duties and coordinates patient flow within the department. Essential functions and responsibilities include:

Schedules appointments and verifies medical necessity information

Plans available time for oxygen cylinder delivery, restocks supplies, supply ordering, patient billing, typing of reports

Identifies and implements appropriate activities, observations and actions in order to achieve expected outcomes/goals.

All of the above must be accomplished in a safe and efficient manner within Hospital policy.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

1. Acts as a resource regarding supplies, required paperwork, meeting minutes, typing of policies and procedures and other forms within the department.
2. Answers telephone; responds or refers calls as necessary; takes complete phone messages to include caller data and response requested.
3. Maintains neat, clean work room and supply cabinets, and communicates housekeeping needs as appropriate.
4. Produces documents which are clean and professionally formatted, portraying positive visual images of the department and its concern for quality.
5. Types interpretations of various tests for pulmonologists. Meets all deadlines.
6. Prioritizes workload at the beginning of the shift so that important deadlines are met. Adjusts priorities when needed or increased workload occurs.
7. Reviews available supplies and equipment daily; reorders supplies as needed, remains cognizant of costs; and, utilizes supplies in an economical manner.
8. Schedules appointments for various tests within the department.
9. Completes check-in process for all patients; prints face sheets, reviews medication list, obtains signed consent and vital signs.
10. Performs Alpha-1 testing as directed by pulmonary function specialist.
11. Collects and provides information to Registration Desk to register patients for Respiratory Care / Pulmonary Rehab.
12. Files departmental correspondence, forms, etc. per file maintenance plan.
13. Documents continuing education information as per format on departmental records within two days following training.
14. Completes daily oxygen rounds.

Qualifications and Standards

Education: Formal Education and Training: High School graduate or equivalent. Course work in medical terminology preferred.

Informal or Continuing Education: As appropriate.

Experience: Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills required. Six months of clerical experience in health care setting, utilizing telephone, keyboarding and numerical skills required. Knowledge of Windows-based programs and Microsoft preferred. Keyboarding proficiency preferred. Previous experience in acute health care facility preferred.

Certifications/Licensure: None required.
